Hi,
I have a 1995 Oldsmobile Aurora 4.0L V8 and have been having trouble getting it started... It clicks (As tho the solenoid is engaging) but won't turn over. I had this problem on and off for a little over 6 months and usually it would start if I waited about 5-10 minutes and tried it again. Recently however, it wouldn't start and it took 2 days before I could get it to turn over and start. The local repair shop is telling me I need to replace the starter ($444), the alternator ($410) and possibly the battery as well. But they also said they could not get consistent test results... I am not especially fond of the idea of throwing $800+ into this if they are not even sure what is happening with it. Any suggestions?
Check the battery...maybe the amp hours is not
sufficient...not original recommended battery....inconsistency in starting...the solenoid is a switch...which may need cleaning....the starter motor may be full of carbon dust....causes a short to earth and pulls battery power on startup....a big neglected area in car maintenance...

if the car sat for two years and was never started.... the motor could very well be seized.... to get at the starter .... is usually done from the bottom. If you can removed the starter... test it to see if it's working.... something else you can try if you can see the starter ... is to tap it gently with a hammer while someone attempts to start it...

On the caps that screw on the two AC ports you will see a Letter L or H.You need to add to the L(low) side and if you have no caps the hose connector on the can of freon will only fit the low side. Also, most of the time the low fittting is smaller than the high fitting is. When adding have your car running with the AC on and on the max setting.Hope this helps.John.

The click you hear is the starter relay. Check for continuity thru relay with battery negative cable disconnected and switch in start position. If no continuity, it probably has burned contacts. Sometimes these can be taken apart and contacts filed/sanded cleaned.

Several- The system should hold freon for years without leaking. There are pressure switches and they cut off the compressor with an undercharge and an overcharge. You need guages to measure the charge. There are testers the A/C shops have called "sniffers" which can detect a leak. If you have no leak then you need a technician to add or remove freon to get the concentration right. Or you need guages.
