Changing the outside door handle on a 1997 Toyota Starlet

The outside door handle of my 1997 Toyota Starlet is broken (plastic!). I have removed the door lining and can see a latch mechanism that is in the way of the bolts that attach the outside door handle.

Do I need to remove the whole window slider as well as the latch mechanism in order to remove and replace the outer door handle? There doesn't seem to be room!

There is two bolts that hold the window slider thing in place. One just below one of the door handle nuts inside the door and the other is on the outside of the door (on the inside of the car). Once these are removed it enables you to move that mech out of the way to get to the other bolt.

I undone the 3 latch screws to give me a bit more movement in the rod that connects to the handle too.

This should give you enough room to get to that other nut and clip the rod into the handle once installed.

Once handle is installed simply just slide the window mech back up into position and bolt back in.

1997 Toyota Rav4 driver side interior door handle broken

Parts can be had from a junk yard...remove door panel and push up on the connecting rod to open...generally, a little piece of plastic slips off or breaks inside the door. It is attached to a certain part of the rod. Should be white or clear plastic...look for the broken bits when door panel is removed so you know what you need....cheers

My rear door on the passenger side is stuck so I can't open it from the outside. but today when I had the door open to ***** the problem my little brother flipped the button and turned on the child lock....

It sounds like the plastic connecting bit that links the outside door lever to the rod, that operates the door mechanism, has broken or become disconnected. To check, you will need to remove the trim on the inside of the door, after removing any screws and the inside door lever. However now that the child safety lock has been set it could be very difficult to get the door open.
All I can suggest is that you look at the other rear door to locate the position of the safety tab and then try to disengage it by using a suitable thin blade or something on your bad door so that you can again use the inside lever.
Once you have the inside trim off and the plastic sheet, you will see an access hole for the door mechanism and the outside operating handle of the door. It should be attached to the actuating rod by the aforementioned plastic bit. If plastic bit appears OK try re-attaching it or replacing it if broken. If the part of the handle which attaches to the rod is broken, the handle will need replacing.

Changing rear door latch handle

Take the plastic cover off from the inside. Fairly easy, a few bolts and some plastic clips holding it on. You may be able to open it from the outside but you'll have to take the inside cover off to replace the handle anyway. This is a common problem and if you need more detailed instructions just do a search on the net.

The left outside door handle on the 1998 camry does not open door. How can I fix it ? Thanks in advance ! Tony

you would have to remove the inner door panel. Inspect the door handle rods, its possible one of the plastic retainers came loose. It maybe possible the handle is broken fron the inside. Hopefully this helps!!

1997 Toyota 4Runner; Drivers side door will not open from the outside and the inside; Handle moves to freely

There are 2 metal rods that hook into the handle. They are retained by a plastic clip that is prone to wear out. You must remove the inner door panel and replace these clips reataching the rods. Parts available through Toyota.

Driver's door lock will not open by key or electronic fob

I was able to determine if you move the inside door handle toward the front of the car, then you could remove the door panel. However, it takes a little force to pot out the plastic clips, but if you work around the outside by appling pressure with a thin tool, such as a putty knife it will pot out.

My problem was a small yellow plastic part that connects the outside and inside door handle rods was broken.

So I plan to replace the part and see if that fixes the provlem. If so I can save over $340 dealer repair costs.

Broken outside door handles (front left and right)on 1999 Corolla. How to remove the interior door panels to get access to the handle?

I have the same problem on a Toyota Tercel 1997. I am trying to remove the door panel with the door closed (I can not open the door because the door knob is stuck in the lock position). I think I will have to cut through the panel. Have you found something ? My e-mail is [email protected]
