Sounds like the trans could use a service, it might be too late to save it and will need a rebuild, but your description sounds like low pump pressure.

the computer is not reading the wheel speed/throttle position properly. in this case there should be codes stored on the computer in the trans which might tell you why it wont shift properly. Take it to autozone and get them to scan codes from the computer, then come back and let us know if there are any.

There are many things to consider with an automatic. Check that you have installed the kick down cable and spring correctly. If the kickdown is stuck or the spring is holding it in the wrong direction this will cause your problem. Insure your 8 pin plug is seated properly into into the sillinoid connector. Also check and see if any transmission codes have been set. Hope this helps.

Wont shift past 2nd

Find your throttle valve cable attached up near cable from throttle pedal ,it's the one that runs down behind toward transmission. With engine off in park, park brake on, Have someone push gas pedal to the floor & observe that cable, to make sure it is retracting properly when pedal released. Now get under & watch where that cable attaches & watch it while doing the same with gas pedal. The lever that it attaches to should move freely & rotate one way when gas pedal pushed, and should return all the way the other way when pedal released. Sometimes that linkage or cable will get seized, and not return fully, which will hold transmission in lower gear. You can use your hand to make sure it is returning all the way if necessary, and if needed, apply penetrating spray to loosen it up, then apply something like white lithium grease to coat it after it's unseized, to prevent repeat in near future.

REAR AXLE PROBLEMS ON 1997 DODGE RAM

did you check your transaxle fluid level? drain/replace transaxle fluid dont forget the friction modifier additive. it is required for proper function of your limited slip. signs of a failing differential are metal shavings in the bottom of the case, worn ring/pinion grooves. the other issue with your shift problem could be a failing shift solenoid, however, a vacuum leak will cause crappy shifts because your trans relies on good vacuum to shift.
