Ive gone thru this THREE TIMES w/ my '99! Theres a thin, rubber vacuum hose that wears thin, gets dirt/oil/water in it & shorts a relay. The last mechanic replaced the hose w/ steel brakeline & Ive had no problems for 2 yrs.

I have a 56 plate jimny the fourwheel drive light is on on the dash is it stuck in fourwheel drive ?

Did you reverse more than 10 metres? Sounds like the hubs are locked into 4wd.this will work if you have auto hubs.but sometimes you have to turn the hub manually if they don't disengage.if you have gone some time or distance in 4wd

I have a 99 gmc sonoma truck 4 wheel drive and it will not come out of 2 wheel drive.

If it has the push button controls on the dash I have had those fail frequently. A lot of times you may push the button and the light may blink and then still stay in 2wd. That switch is also the control module for the 4wd. If it is the know select you need to check for power at the actuator on the transfer case.

if you had the rear wheels still on the ground in 4WD and it never drove the vehicle off the jacks or stands , you have a problem in the transfer case
in other words the transfer case is not selecting WD

Should the front drive shafts be turning when the truck is not in 4 wheel drive

If your transfer case has an "auto 4wd" push button choice then the front shaft will turn all the time. This is due to how the transfer case is designed internally to provide that option.

4x4 quit working

Jack up the rear wheels and put it on jack stands. Have someone get in it and put it in 4wd and drive. Release the brake. Rear wheels are spinning only right. Don't get under it but look under it and see if the front driveshaft is spinning. If the shaft is spinning but the wheels aren't it is likely a bad front axle actuator. If the front shaft isn't spinning it is a transfercase problem.

1998 gmc sonoma 4 wheel drive not working. Front axles clink when button pushed. Transfer drive shaft not turning when jacked up . Don't see any vacume leaks on switch and vacume lines not filled with...

Watch what clinks?
You should see the vacuum servo move the linkage. The servo could have a leak. You can connect your own hose to the servo temporarily, and simply **** on it, then plug it with your tongue. After about 15 seconds, if it holds that vacuum, then no leaks.
The linkage could also be binding. Transfer case could also be binding. Try helping the servo by hand. Careful when under the vehicle. Chock wheels and make sure in neutral while underneath.

4wd will not engage on 2002 gmc sierra 1500

try going into reverse for 10 feet then go to drive for 10 feet that might help if not it is to the wiring to you 4x4 engage system (wires to your wheel hub)

1999 Jimmy 4wd not engaging. It has push button

could be your front actuator or your actuator motor on the transfer case.
