My 1989 toyota 4-runner 4-wheel drive not working.

Sometimes my 1989 toyota 4-runner will not move when I engage the wheel locks and put it in 4-wheel drive. When I free the locks I must put the vehicle in reverse then in drive before it will move. Sometimes when I engage 4-wheel drive and try moving forward the vehicle jerks and I hear loud clunks. What might be the problem and what do you think repair cost might be worse case?

I haven't often use 4-wheel drive and the vehicle is usually in the garage
during the winter months. I bought it new and have kept it well maintained. No body rust. The transmission was replaced eight months ago.

SOURCE: Ignition locked up

I have seen this compaint many times, it is caused by the lock pins getting broken or jammed, you will have to replace the ignition lock cylinder to repair this.

SOURCE: 1994 Toyota Camry automatic. All forward no reverse

are you sure it is first gear it is making when in 1. In park does the car lock up if you try to push it with the handbrake off. If not your problem is adjustment of the cable i.e. although the lever is in reverse the gearbox isn't.

SOURCE: We repair our Toyota Lucida automatic transmission

The problem concerning low gear locked up sounds like a bad primary shift solenoid (located on the valve body internally) the other issue with the forward gear only engaging with the rpm up to 1800 could be inadequate hydraulic pressure (a transmission front pump issue), most likely there is no problem with the pump if when shifting the selector lever into reverse it engages quickly and normally. This may be a transmission computer issue and I would recommend having the dealership do a diagnostic check on the transmission to eliminate the computer as a culprit. transmission problems are very difficult to figure out and before spending a lot of money get the electrical diagnostic done first.

97 4 runner wont move,no noises just like your in nuteral.Fluid is fine i can move it in 4x4 what can i look for before my girl tells me to dump it

To understand you
the car runs but when you engage drive it doesn't move
however if you move the selector from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive it does move
is that correct
logically if that is the case the auto transmission is working but the drive to the rear wheels is not functioning
That would point to a problem in the , diff connection ( broken rear axle )
by engaging 4 wheel drive you are moving by the front diff only

4 wheel drive will not engage on my 1989 gmc sierra 2500?

actually that first soultion is wrong it is correct on smaller pickups but on the full size pick ups they use a differnet sytem
there a electric actuator on front axle
there be two elctrical plugs on front axle u want the bigger of the two other one is just to turn the 4 wheel drive light on
un plug actuator then remove actuator after it removed plug it back in but leave it out of axle turn key on and shift down to 4 wheel drive the actuator should move out if it dont that your problem if i does move this isnt your problem it either the tranfer case or in front axle

I have a 2000 4wd tacoma with manual locking hubs and the 4wd does not seem to be engaging after locking the hubs and shifting the lever into 4 hi or 4 low

Sounds like one of your hubs is sticking and not engaging. You can check them by engaging the hubs and the transfer case and jacking up each front wheel independently if it doesn't spin your good, if it does you found your problem. As far as fixing a hub goes, it may be just dry and need some grease, or there are some very good aftermarket hubs available from Warn.
Hope this helps

4 wheel drive not engaging 1986 4 runner IFS

The self locking hubs (or automatic hubs) are actuated by vacuum. The vacuum line is usually on the driver's side of the differential, towards the front of the vehicle on Toys. You might want to check it out and see if it's cracked, broken, or gone.
