My 97 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L Pickup has started having shifting problems. The truck has no acceleration and wants to keep dropping down a gear. When this happens the engine will hit about 2300 rpms and won?t accelerate any more? It feels as thought the vacuum advance is not kicking in and that the engine won?t go past the 2500 rpms as mentioned earlier

I hate to tell you but it sounds like your transmission was rebuilt incorrectly and need to be corrected or tossed and start anew, new transmissions for your truck are roughly $1,600. I'm sorry to hear about your problem.
have you tried to roll the pickup and put it in first gear because you have to roll the pickup to a certain speed like 10 mph or so and then put it into first gear should start the pickup. If this does not work that you have serious engine problems with that old pickup and might be inside the tramsmission problem. So let me know if this works out
Mr. dodge ram, with the 46re trans the pcm needs a signal from the tps sensor to monitor throtlle opening, accel and decel, what has happened the tps has a worn out spot in cruise area, hence the down shift, uphill is fine because your past the worn out spot, replace your tps sensor, its mount on left side of throtlle body , 2 screws, 1 connecter, and its out, when done turn key on, eng off, step on gas pedal 6 times slowly, then turn off key, this will help set min tps setting, GOOD LUCK RDJRP
Attach a diagnostic computer to the leads on your engine.
Check the codes to confirm that the onboard computer is choosing to shift under the correct conditions.
Or, get your local Dodge dealer (before they go bankrupt) to run the computer-diagnosis.
I had the same problem with my 96 Ram 1500. I thought I was going to have to pull it out and get it rebuilt or just replace it. That was at 134,000Km it's now got 210,000 and shifting like a dream. What I did to solve the problem was this, as follows: 1. No lucas transmission Fix makes things worse. 2. Get your self a new transmission filter and gasket 3. Grab Gunk transmission medic 12oz 4. Grab 7 Liters of Valvoline ATF+4 transmission fluid (Made for chrysler transmissions) 5. Drop the trans pan and drain all the oil, clean pan and magnet 6. start truck for 5 seconds and the pump will pour out another 1 liter 7. re-install filter, gasket and pan, then add your Valvoline ATF+4 8. Add, the valvoline, transmission medic and make sure you have the right level of fluid
That solved my transmission problems, instantly it was shifting better, I no longer had to let off the gas to make it shift. Now if you have large pieces of metal on the magnet, and it's totally covered in filings, you might want to consider rebuilding the trans. My magnet had usual clutch.
Anyhow good luck, let me know if it did the trick for you. Justin
