Believe me. I have a 2001 ford focus 2.0 with a single overhead cam and the spark plugs are on the side of the engine toward the radiator. The dohc plugs are on top in the center.

It's in the VIN number, 8th digit is engine. get digit and I will look up.

Also, if it says ZETEC, it is DOHC.

The nickname for the SOHC is SPI.

    If the spark plugs are on the front side of the engine, it is a sohc. If the spark plugs are in the center of the valve cover, it is a dohc.

Lol, I never knew they made a sohc focus, 99% of these are zetecs DOHC. so they have the spark plugs down the middle of the cyliderhead.

    all petrol focus are dohc.only the 1.8 tdci diesel is single

SOURCE: how can i put a DOHC into a SOHC 2001 Ford Focus?

Easier to rebuilt the SOHC since your going to have to replace the ECM and wire harness to accommodate the DOHC engine. Good luck and keep it simple.

well there is usually an easy way to tell....pop the hood and look on teh intake manifold usually it will say and should say 2.0L dohc or sohc ill check my resources and let you know if it doesnt tell you....let me know :)
