All shops charge differently. Call around. Plan on spending about 500 give or take.

On an 2.2L engine timing chain, cam and crank gear and timing cover gasket set about $475.00, less $65.00 if going to used same gear's.

on an 2.4L engine both cam gear's, crank gear, timing chain and balance shaft chain, gasket set ( timing cover ) about $792.00.

How can you tell if you have a broken timeing chain or timeing is off on a 1996 cavalier 2.2l

take off distributor cap and try to start engine. If rotor does not turn its because timing belt/chain is broken.

1996, 2.2 chevy cavalier, I keep getting different answers. Does it have a timing chain, or timing belt? If it has a timing chain, does that need to be changed?

the 2.2 is a timing chain. If the cover on the front of the engine is metal it is almost always a timing chain. If it is plastic is always a timing belt.

1996 CHEVROLET CAVALIER.

It is probably not the anti theft system if it cranks over fast then slow it is your timing chain. If you want to try resetting the anti theft system disconnect the battery cables for 24 hours and reconnect them.

Replace the coil pack. You can try to reset the anti theft by disconnecting the battery cables for 24 hours.
