1. My 2006 2WD Explorer (65,000 miles) has stopped blowing hot air after the engine has warmed up and in idle. It just blows cold air, but when I start driving, it will start blowing hot air. And one time it started to overheat almost instantly and the temperature gauge shot up. The blower works fine, it blows cold air when the heat is on and the car is engine running but idle. When this happens I know to start watching the temp gauge.
Once after stopping to turn the heater started blowing cold air and the temp gauge incrementally shot to the max which activated the red temp light. I pulled off to the side and immediately the temp gauge went down to normal and red light went off.

2. On many occasions after stopping and starting (at a light), my explorer accelerates very slowly and the engine revs very high. After stopping again and changing the gear or taking my foot off the gas and putting it in N a few times it goes back to normal power and rpm.

I had my Ford dealer check the transmission for the revving problem but not the heater problem (I didn’t notice it at the time). They changed the transmission fluid and said it should be fine (they didn’t experience the revving).

My engine coolant reservoir never seems to stay full after filling to line and checking days later, whether I check it hot or cold. I never see or smell any leaking coolant.

After reading blogs from other owners, it seems the above two problems are related because many have noticed that when the engine revs the heater issue crops up. What’s going on and how much will it cost for repair.

Cold air coming from passager glove compartment making the front ducts blow out warm not hot

There could be cold air coming in because the air vent is not closing properly when it is suppose to close.

I have a 2012 ford explorer that only blows hot air while moving, but idling blows warm air.

Yeah, I'm from Minnesota, so know what you mean. You need to check the flow of air. A couple things. Is it any better if you have the re-circulator on? Also, does the temperature gauge vary any between idle and driving?

Try idle in neutral with the engine running at driving RPM - does that make a change?

I suspect a flow restriction at low RPM.

Blows cold when first started and then blowes warm

I would replace the AC compressor cycling switch it may be sticking have seen it a number of times. The switch is located in the receiver dryer on the passenger side of the engine compartment. See picture below.

If this isn't the problem the AC compressor relay may also cause this, flip a coin.

sounds like your thermostat is stuck open, if its takes a very long time for the engine to warm up and you get nothing but cold air from your heat then thats the first place i would start.

Heater not working

First you have to identify what causes the problem.
To do this you have to:
1) When engine is cold check the level of coolant. If it is low fill it up.
2) Start engine and check if engine reaches regular temperature. If your engine is not heated enough it means your thermostat does not work properly and should be replaced.
3) If engine temperature is normal, then check the temperature of pipes that go to/from heater core. These pipes are located up the fire wall (easier access is from the passenger side). If pipe/pipes are cold (even engine is warm) it means you heater core is plugged and should be flushed. Keep in mind, flushing the whole cooling system is different from flushing heater core.
4) If pipe/pipes are hot/warm, turn off the fan, switch controller to the hot position, wait for 3-4 minutes and turn on the fan. Note if the cold air blows first or warm air blows first but it cools down in 5-10 seconds. If the air blows cold than it is most probably the problem with blend door or blend door actuator.
5) If air blows warm first and then cools down, then while running engine and remaining the transmission in PARKING position, press on the gas pedal until your engine reaches 3,000 RPM. Check if your heater blows warm/hot air. If it does, then your water pump does not work properly and should be replaced. If the air still cold, I would suggest flushing the heater core.
