I had the same problem on our 1999 Forester after replacing the battery. Here was the solution I was given by Subaru Santa Cruz.
1) the key to the ON position where all the dash lights up.
2) disconnect the NEGATIVE battery terminal.
3) wait 15 seconds then reconnect the the battery.
4) start the engine from the ON position.
If this doesn't work, the car must be taken in for repair.

I had this same problem, I replaced both idler pulleys on my 2002 H6 sedan, this solved the problem, also the power steering pump onn these cars starts to go out after 80,000 or so. I would look at the belt and the two idler pulleys, if either of them have excessive play(ie-belt looks like it wiggles or moves back and forth at all, while traveling over the idler pulleys-2 on H6, one is a belt tensioner) replace immediatley.

you will not hert it if you jump start it . i done many of them to 09 and newer car and truck.

sounds like a open diode in alternator,when brake and battery lights come disconnect green plug on alternator,if the lights go out you've found the problem,very common problem with subarus
