When refilling, make sure that you do not rush the filling - pour the coolant slowly so that the air gets out. Had that problem and trapped air in the system. Would drive vehicle for 300 miles at 70mph and engine is still very cold with no heat....had to release the bleeder screw and rev the engine to get out the air. Bleeder screw is located on the upper of the engine shown on the manual. Dealer wanted $350.00 to bleed it. Takes about 2 hours, so be safe and don't rush and fill the coolant - pour slowly.

Removal & Installation
CAUTION Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.

  1. Drain the radiator and recycle the engine coolant.
  2. Remove the upper radiator hose bracket bolt and remove the bracket.
  3. On 1993–98 3.0L engine models:
    • Remove the bolt from the A/C high pressure line bracket at the front of the engine.
    • Remove the two A/C accumulator/drier bracket bolts.
    • Position the accumulator/drier and A/C line out of the way.
  4. Remove the bypass hose clamp and remove the hose from the water inlet.
  5. Remove the four water inlet bolts and remove the inlet.
  6. Remove the thermostat from the inlet.
To install:
  1. Clean and dry the water inlet and thermostat housing mating surfaces.
  2. Apply a continuous bead of RTV silicone sealant 0.08–0.12 inch (2.0–3.0mm) wide to the water inlet mating surface.

NOTE The water inlet must be installed within 5 minutes of applying the sealant.

  3. Install the thermostat in the water inlet, with the jiggle valve at the topmost (12 o’clock) position.
  4. Install the water inlet to the thermostat housing. Install the bolts and tighten them to 12–15 ft. lbs. (16–21 Nm).
  5. Install the bypass hose to the water inlet, using a new clamp.
  6. On 1993–98 3.0L engine models:
    • Install the accumulator/drier and tighten the bracket bolts to 45 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    • Install the A/C high pressure line bracket and tighten the bolt to 45 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    • Install the upper radiator hose bracket and tighten the bolt to 34–48 ft. lbs. (46–65 Nm).

NOTE Allow the sealant to dry for at least 30 minutes before adding coolant.

  7. Fill the cooling system. Run the engine and check for leaks.

Replace thermastat

you will need to remove the exhaust manifold in order to get to the water pump that sits on the thermastat. Once you get the manifold off you will see the water pump there will be 4 bolts that hold the belly to the pump remove them and left it up the thermastat is under it.

Where is the thermostate located on a 1998 cadillac catera 3.0 v6 engine

Hi Friend:

To Locate your thermastat, Open your Hood and look down at the top of your radiator. You'll see a Top Raditor Hose that goes from your radiator to your Thermastat Housing.

You'll see a Hose clamp on the Thermastat housing .

NOTE: before you loosen the Hose Clamp Make sure you your car is cooled down and remove your radiator cap to release any pressure that is in your system.

After the Hose is off you'll see a Domed shaped Housing that is your Thermastat Housing. Remove the Bolts that Hold the Housing on and Seals the Cooling System. From Leaking out of the Housing.

After removing the Housing you'll see your Thermastat .Just remove it and Clean up all old gasket Material so you can replace the gasket with your new one .But put in your new thermastat 1st.

Then make sure you seal the gasket with Gasket Glue. And Replace the Housing Bolts and Tighten up good and Sung.

Put back on your hose then clamp. And Refill your Radiator with Coolant.

This will get your new thermastat in and get you Ready to go .

Need to know how to replace thermostat

Hi: You'll first want to Drain your Radiator take your radiator cap off so when drain it the coolant will drain freely. Then Drain your raditor you'll find a Drain Tee outlet on the inside bottom of your radiator. And catch the Coolant in a Drain Pan. Standing in Front of your Vehicle you'll see a Hose connected to your Radiator(UPPER RADIATOR HOSE) take your Hand and follow it down to your Engine until you locat a Hose Clamp Remove the hose clamp and work off the top Radiator Hose.Where you removed the hose theres a Dome Shaped Metal Housing, with 2 bolts in it. Take those 2-Bolts out and Remove the Dome Thermastat Housing,Under it You'll Find your Thermostat it shuold come out with a little Resistance. Once its out, Clean Up The Thermastat Dome of any Gasket still left on it, and clean where you remove the Thermastat Surface. To put back just Reverse the Removal Be-sure your Thermastat is put in right and not up side down. Then get some Gasket Sealer Put a Little on the Thermastat Housing where gasket goes and some on the Enging surface and Install your New Thermastat,Be careful when Tightening the 2-Bolts on The Housing. not to Over tighten them. The torque Specs on the 2 bolts range between 10- 15 Foot pounds. You don't want to Strip,
After you get your New Thermastat in and your Radiator Hose on and Clamped.Make Sure you have closed the Drain outlet. then fill with coolant,if your coolant is old i recommend putting new coolant in. I hope this helps You.I;m Sure it Will, But please let me Know through FIXYA by Voting and a Testamony. This way I'll know that my solution was Helpful. Thanks From d_hubbs

HOW TO CHANGE THERMOSTAT ON THE V-6

First make sure engine is cool.
-Put drain pan under car, coolant will run out.
-Remove the TOP radiator hose that runs to the metal thermastat housing. Coolant will now be running out, try and direct it to the drain pan below.
-Remove the thermastat housing, BEFORE removing the thermastat make sure you TAKE NOTE at how it is situated in the casting.
- Take the thermastat housing and run a wire brush on the flat spot were the old gasket material is.
-Both mating sides of the thermastat housing MUST BE PERFECTLY CLEAN. There can not be any old gasket material left.
-Insatll new thermastat.
-Put a very light amount of PERMATEX orange high temp. silicone on BOTH sides of the new gasket.
-Put a small amount on bolt threads also.
-Now install thermastat housing, and bolts.
-Tighten bolts down a little at a time, alternating between the two, unitl till they are tight.
-Install the radiator hose, and tighten hose clamp.
-Remove radiator cap, pour in coolant, until it sits just below the radiator cap neck. This may take a little time as the system has some air in it.
-Install the radiator cap. Make sure you radiator overflow tank is filled properly.
-Remove the drain pan, make SURE ALL the tools use used are secure, and out of the engine bay.
-Start engine, and place your heater control to 'HEAT"
-Let engine run until the top radiator hose is hot, which means you thermastat has opened.
-Keep watching the engine temp AT ALL TIMES, we wnat to make sure there is no air in the system.
-Inspect for any leaks. Now when the top radiator hose is hot make sure the hose clamp is tight.
Please let me know how it goes.
