Hello I have a V reg 1.6 automatic Clio. Yesterday, the engine made a scrapping noise when I started it, I went for a bit of a drive and the warning lights for battery, abs, stop and service came on. I managed to get the car home but the battery had virtually run out by the time I got back. I had the alternator belt replaced just a month ago as this came off draining the battery in the process. The new belt is still in place. It is very Icy here and has been for several days but I have been running the car. The only electrical fault that I have noticed is one of the locks doesn't close when I use the central locking on the key. Can someone give me an idea about what may have caused this before I get the car to a mechanic. I would also like to know if it may have been caused by the work the last mechanic did on her. Thanks Tom
Get it checked to make sure that the alternator is charging the battery as it sounds like the alternator is faulty, you can check this yourself using a multimeter you should see around 12.5V to 12.8V with the engine NOT started then start the engine check the voltage it should have gone up to around 13.2V 13.6V this shows that the alternator is charging the batter if its not get it replaced. It could also be a bad battery with the cold weather alot of battery will just die and need replacing you can take it out and get your local car spares to check it for you.
Check your charging system first than check for DTC codes
