1989 jeep wrangler wont shift gear and clutch gone loose

I have a 1989 jeep wrangler. yesterday, after the stick shift felt stiff to shift all of a sudden, the clutch felt suddenly loose. Today, the stick shift stopped moving completely. Finally, I was able to shift the jeep in to first and drove all the way home in first. when I turn the car off the gears seem to shift with the clutch down, but not when the car is on. any thoughts would help... thank you in advance

Get the clutch slave cylinder and master cylinder looked at.One of the 2 has failed. If the pedal goes to the floor or is very loose, this is very likely the cause. Not an expensive fix.Hope this helps

If the clutch system is hydraulic, check the clutch master cylinder for proper fluid level. If out or nearly so, look for signs of fluid leakage around the master cylinder, the hose down to the clutch slave cylinder, and the slave cylinder itself. If everything looks dry, fill the master cylinder with fresh fluid, bleed the air out of the system (like the brake system), and check that the clutch arm is moved by the clutch pedal properly. If all looks correct, try putting the transmission in gear with the engine running. Hope this gets you running!

Sounds like you are having a clutch problem. The sudden looseness in the clutch pedal indicates a problem with either the hydralic system, (slave or master or line) leaking or clutch pressure plate going out. Check your clutch fluid resevoir first, if low look for a leak under the vehicle, have a friend push the clutch and get underneath to find leak.

'89 Jeep Wrangler. Why won't it go into 3rd and 4th gear?

It is possible that the shift linkage has become loose and shifted but it is more likely that an intermediate gear or another component inside the transmission has become broken. This may require a transmission rebuild to correct.

1987 jeep wrangler, BA 10/15 transmission stuck in first gear. What is likely cause in transmission?

a stick shift.
ok ill do stick shift 101..... (repaired many a box i have)
first off it can be 3 things, the stick bad. the box and the clutch.
so can you shift all gears , engine off, and parked.?
Q1: yes/no.?
if yes, can you shift to 2nd gear, parked & engine off
and then start engine and move in second gear using the clutch pedal.?
ill stop here, as most get lost , if i post the full diagnosis..... end.
we can go way beyond this. easy.

98 Jeep Wrangler will shift when off but not while running makes grinding noise.

There is something wrong with the clutch. Make sure that there is enough clutch fluid in it. For some reason the clutch isn't disengaging like it should, so you are grinding the gears in your transmission, making that awful noise. You want to get it looked at before you ruin your transmission by stripping the gears.

My 89 Jeep YJ manual will not go in to reverse while running

Problem is likely either a worn shift fork or bad synchro (both inside the transmission) It's unlikely that you have a clutch problem otherwise the problem would be with first and reverse and shifting other gears would also be difficult.

Stuck in 4 Wheel Drive Gear 1989 Jeep Wrangler was stuck in sand. Shifted to 4 wheel drive and now cannot switch back to AWD. Any suggestions?

Assume that is stuck in 4wd, cannot shift back to 2wd. Have you tried shifting to 4wd/Lo and back? Try letting out on the clutch while slowly rolling?

Assume you are manual transmission?

1991 jeep wrangler sahara shifting promblems

Your clutch is not disengaging. If it a hydrolic clutch chk. the fluid in resavor, Or slave cyl. for the clutch is bad, Or it has got air in it and needs to be bleed. This is a clutch problem, nothing wrong with trans. If its a manual clutch linkage its an ajustment thing. My best guess if its hydrolic slave cyl. went bad, or resavor is out of fluid.
