My 98 explorer turns over but will not start. The fuel pump kicks on for half a second, then immediately shuts off. Does anyone know how to go about fixing this?

Your truck has two sensors that are in control. There is a camshaft sensor that controls when the fuel injectors open according to camshaft position. If this one is bad the fuel injectors wont open and the engine wont get any fuel.It also has a crankshaft sensor that is in control of allowing spark to the propor spark plug at the right time.If this sensor is bad you will not have any spark to any of the spark plugs. The fuel pump will only run for 2 to 3 seconds unless the motor starts,it is designed that way and it primes the fuel system and brings it up to pressure.(aprox 40 psi )

What does the fuel reset indicator on the panel stands for? Ford explorer 98

Fuel Reset
The FUEL RESET indicator is grounded through the inertia switch whenever the vehicle is subjected to a high force situation. The inertia fuel shutoff switch (IFS switch) (9341) cuts off the fuel pump motor. The FUEL RESET indicator illuminates when the IFS switch has been tripped

Fuel shut off switch location

The fuel pump shut off switch ( inertia switch ) is in the drivers footwell behind the kick panel. The panel is probably held on with clips and will pop off with a light tug.

It could be a blockage in the fuel line to the engine - after the filter.
I'm assuming you've tested the line to the filter, as gas would have come out when you took the filter off.

The fuel pump may have gotten hot and stuck. Try hitting the gas tank with a rubber hammer or a wooden bat with the key on. DON'T USE METAL ON METAL. You should hear it hum for 2-3 seconds if it's working. (have someone turn the key to the on position while you are near the tank) If you can hear the pump humming, and it still won't start you will need to change the fuel filter.

the anti theft does not shut the fuel off, it disables the starter motor, so the problem u have is a failing fuel pump, this most often happens on trucks lke yours at around 100,000 miles.

My1998 Explorer doesn't start..I need to shut off the fuel shut off button, but don't know where it is..can anyone tell me where it is located

The fuel pump shut-off switch is
located in the passenger’s foot well,
behind the side kick panel. There should be a hole to depress the reset button.
