I took my 2005 Toyota Corolla to the local (company name withheld) mechanic for an oil & filter change. I told him that the "Required Maintenance" light was lit. When he finished his work he said he turned off the Req. Maint. light but told me that the "Check Engine" light was lit. I was surprised because it WAS NOT lit before I had the oil change. My question: Can a mechanic TURN ON the check engine light?
He can't hit a switch and turn on the Check Engine Light, however there are several dozen ways a shoddy mechanic can cause that Light to come on.
Two things you can do is:
1. Disconnect the negative side of the battery and wait about 30-minutes before reconnecting. Check to see if that Light comes back. If not great! If it does:
2. Find out why the Check Engine Light is on. There should be a code that the computer has set. Take it to Autozone or other auto parts stores, where they can hook your vehicle up (for free) to a DRB Scan Tool to eloborate or extrapolate what the Code(s) are.
The real question is if the work the mechanic did caused this. Have their work checked.
