1997 Chevy 4L60e Transmission Shift Problem

I have a 1997 Chevy Suburban 1500 with a 5.7L engine and 4L60e transmission. The transmission doesn't go into gear when first placed in Drive or 3rd. I have to place it in 1st or 2nd gear and manually shift up to Drive the first time I start down the road. Once I've shifted up to Drive the transmission downshifts and upshifts normally from stops until I place it in Park or Reverse. If I shift into Park or Reverse then I must go through the manual shifting again. Also, if I don't get to 4th gear before I stop, I must go through the manual shifting again. This happens whether the transmission is hot or cold. I've read several forums searching for an answer but the symptoms described while similar aren't exactly like mine. I don't know whether it would be a broken front sprag, a bad solenoid or a faulty connection. Any ideas? Thanks!

Transmissions in chevy trucks show internal problems by a flashing gear selector indicator light or the light wont come on at all

  • Anonymous Aug 09, 2011

well that sounds like a likely answer, the ****** was rebuilt about 3k ago and everything was great untill: no gear indicator light, the tach and spedo stopped working and it doesnt seem to want to shift at all. all at the same time.

sounds like the velocity speed sensor [VSS].

No forward movement in OD or D, but L2, L1 and R work: Forward sprag is broken. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt. Try not to run or drive the car or further damage could result.
hope it help

Sounds like a bad shift selenoid in the transmission not letting it shift on its own. The transmission usually needs to be overhauled.

Put a 1996 4l60e into 97 truck.goes strait to 3rd gear unless man shift.no 4th

The transmission in this truck is electronically controlled through shift solenoids,it also has a number of sensors that the computer control module uses to determine proper times to shift and what is the appropriate gear, so you must have the computer scanned to see if any fault codes related to the transmission are in memory

I have a 93 Chevy Suburban 1500 and the Transmission won't shift into any gear. I have an 1983 Chevy Suburban Transmission that is still good. Can I use the 83 Transmission in my 93 Suburban?

Not without a little adapting. The 1993 has a 4l60e which is electronically controlled and has shift solenoids. If the 83 is an overdrive it is a 700r4 which is the same trans but not electronic. If you put it in the speedo wont work and you will need to install a T.V. cable so the transmission will shift. The 93 won't go forward or backwards?
