If it ran prior to the filter replacement, it will most likely be a filter issue. Installed backwards? You have to allow fuel pressure to build back up and fill the new filter before it will start. You can try cranking the engine while applying the gas pedal slightly to see if it will start
Is it out of gas? Try spraying starting fluid into the throttle body and see if it starts then. If so, you have a fuel delivery problem. If not, you have an electrical problem (no spark).
this is a fuel problem, fuel pump is bad, or fuel filter is clogged up. check to see if fuel pump is working. check fuses and relays if it does not work. to rule out a bad fuse or relay.
Too many items that can cause that for anyone to give you an absolute "fix" but : You need to do some testing to narrow it down to if you have a fuel or ignition problem (spark). If it starts when you crank it and spray carb cleaner into throttle body, then it's on the fuel side. One common item to both and a common failure item as well is the crank position sensor. Check that as well. There are tests that you can do using a digital volt-ohmeter. Tests and expected results are listed in haynes or chiltons as well as other inexpensive manuals. Don't change anything unless you verify it as bad and if you have a security system make sure it is not locking you out from starting. Once tested, you can ask back here for specific problems if any. Good Luck
have you checked all ofyour fuses? usually when you hook up a battery backwads you end up blowing a fuse and or fry your alternator on older modeled vehicles as there is no protection for it.
Will it try to start if you spray some carb cleaner in the throttle body? If so you need to check fuel pressure and if low, power to the fuel pump while cranking, the gauge not working could be a seperate issue. Could it be that the car is out of gas since the gauge doesn't work? Just asking. If so you may just need a sending unit. If you end up needing a fuel pump, you'll get a sender with it. I've never seen a sender and a pump go out at the exact same time, the use two different circuit's. The ECM really doesn't have any thing to do with the fuel gauge on this car.
under the vehicle...mounted close to the front of the fuel tank...be sure to release the fuel pressure before you disconnect any line..you can do that by removing the fuel pump relay and cranking the engine
