My son filled up by 2001 volvo with a tank full of

My son filled up my 2001 Volvo with a tank-full of Race Trac fuel last night after a long trip to Florida. The engine was running smoothly until the fill-up. Now it is bucking and running very rough. Is this water in tank? If so should I drain the fuel from the tank? How would I do that?

Drain the fuel asap. Race fuel is not meant for a everyday car it will ruin the engine since its not set up to run on that type of fuel, its probably kicking a code to you engine due to this to make it run this way. If you drain the tank and then fill it with normal 87,89,91 octane gas you should be ok. Not too sure on how to drain the tank on that year Volvo.

Volvo engine shuts down when turning a corner

You have a crack in one of the flexible fuel lines inside of your gas tank that lets the pump suck air when ever the gal level is below the level of the crack in the line. It is an easy repair once you remove the fuel pump. Should cost you about 3 dollars if you do the work yourself. To test fill you tank all the way to the top and go turn a corner and see what happens. I bet it will run just fine with a full tank.

Electrical issue is causing your hassles. Look for a bad ground in circuit common to those items.

How much water do you think got into the tank? If the fuel door was closed it could not have been much. You need to have the tank drained to get all the water out, and then add a fuel dryer liquid to get any residual moisture out. After you son has done all of this, it should run fine and you should not have to replace the pump.

High fuel consumption

The fuel pressure regulator or the Mass Airflow sensor are common problems with the 240, and will cause these symptoms.
