I have a 91 Cadillac with a 5.7 tbi. Fuel pump occasionally comes on for 2 sec prime, but car will stall after 5 seconds. Other times there is no voltage at pump, either to prime, or when cranking. Seems simple, but here is the head scratcher.... Car still won't stay running even with FP directly connected to 12v source. It WILL run with carb cleaner sprayed in. Did both the FP and relay die at the same time? What other things do I need to consider? Done already... filter blown out - flows fine all fusible links to ecm (red wire fenderwell area) are good blew out IN line - not clogged while I understand that there are some other components capable of shutting off fuel (PUC and oil pressure switch) there are a non issue if power is directly connected to pump. sorry for the disjointed question cold beers in the fridge calling my name and I can't concentrate...

There is a unit called a fuel pressure regulator that controls the FP operation
when the pressure is low it starts the pump and when the pressure reaches a preset value it switches the pump off
AH-- I hear you say the pump works when it has direct 12 volts
true but the engine runs on quick start but not from fuel supplied
that is probably because the pressure switch is not working and there is no pressure for the injectors
IF you were to bring it to my shop , that is where I would start looking for the problem and I would recommend changing that pressure switch

Best do a fuel pressure test. Should have chg. fuel filter from the get go. The only other filter is on the end of the fuel pump in tank. Bad gas and dirty gas will plug up fuel filter, hense burn pump up.

SOURCE: fuel pump relay & fuze location for 1994 chevy 51500 pick up

if you really have a carburetor as you say, you have a mechanical fuel pump so you will not have a fuel pump relay. if you have fuel injection then you do have a fuel pump relay, need to know which engine it is to help more.

SOURCE: 1987 chevy s10 2.5l tbi will not start. changed

That eliminates the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors. Have you checked the fuel injector itself for an open winding or stuck valve plunger? There should not be a steady 12 volts to the injector--if good injector, it would be spraying fuel steadily into the throttle body. But at least the engine should try to run if poorly. Take the injector out, dry it off with air, and intermittently apply 12 volts to one terminal while grounding the other. You should hear a click from inside every time you touch 12 volts. If not, replace it. If it does, it may be plugged with debris. Try blowing through it in reverse with compressed air.

Can not locate fuel reset on 2007 cadillac dts

The 2007 Cadillac DTS does not have an inertia fuel reset switch. Instead, it has a fuel pump relay located in the rear fuse block under the back seat. If you are experiencing a fuel system issue, you may want to check the fuel pump relay and fuse first. If these components are functioning properly, you may need to have the fuel system diagnosed by a qualified mechanic.

2001 Cadillac Deville. Fuel pump went out so I bought a new one. One day the car just went dead while driving it. And would not start back it would crank but not start

not true at all the prime pulse is 1 to 3 seconds
and stays off until cranked, only cranking matters
prime only speeds up the start, cranking pressure matters.
and rail pressure for sure. cranking. matters. most.
if car has IMMo you know when the key fails the engine can run for 1 to 10 seconds on some cars, to get you say out of trouble
or get the car off a curb to tow it? yes. of away from a cliff??????
hummmmm
first is learn to find the IMMO lamp on the dash and see if it is glowing the correct way as they free users guide states
fact #2:
scan the pcm when it fails to start or stalls
the scan tool tells you why, sure can, even shows key bad
try both keys yet, came new with 2 keys new. car.
both IMMO keys
modern cars need scan too to diagnose EFI
if can tell you lots of things like key bad, spark bad. or fuses blow or
well 100s of things.
scan it
and use fuel pressure gauge at the rail.
only if all fuses all good and scans show no clues.!
then check pressure with a real meter.

Fuel pump charges system when key is turned on, but the 3.1 only runs for 5 secs. then dies. You can do this all day, but it only runs for 5 secs. then dies.

Some systems (GM TBI) do this and require a second signal from the oil pressure sender to keep the system running.

Have 1987 chevy pickup truck not getting fuel to the TBI unit. when you turn ignitionkey to "on" pump starts to pump fuel, and will start to run but shuts off after 2 to 3 second or so. Even...

Kent, That sounds like normal operation.....see this link (https://www.justanswer.com/chevy/0z9bu-fuel-pump-relay-located-1987-chevy-silverado.html) The ECM shuts the pump down if the engine doesn't begin running in two seconds. I would bleed out the fuel line up to the TBI...crack the line at the TBI then cycle the key a couple of times until you see gas coming out of the line at the TBI. That will ensure you have fuel at the TBI, then try to start the engine. See the link for additional info.

Check and see what code(s) may be stored in the PCM.
Also, listen for the pump to prime for about 2 seconds when you first turn the key.
If it does not prime your fuel pump relay may be faulty. With extended cranking, the oil pressures builds up and then the oil pressure switch will energize the pump. When the car has not sat long there is still enough oil pressure in the system to energize the pump for quiker starts. Sitting over night or for a long period and the pressure has plenty of time to drop.

Wont idle or start without priming tbi

first check fuel pressure with a mechanical fuel gauge that attaches to fuel line schrader valve. around T.B.I. if no pressure with key on check fuel pump relay for correct operation, and also the oil pressure switch has the fuel circuit to it so possible oil pressure switch also. fuel pump has a check valve to keep fuel from going back to tank, so when u turn key on fuel pressure should go up within 1-2 seconds on gauge. if fuel pressure goes down quickly, possible bad fuel check valve, change fuel pump and fuel pump check valve (located right above fuel pump inside tank)

sounds like you have a problem with your fuel presure regulator

as for pouring gas down the tbi try turning your key on then off a few times wait about 3-5 secs for the fuel pump to prime the system and try that if the key prime works than have a mechanic presure test the f.p.r.
and try and remember there are a ton of auto salvage yards that will sell an fpr for like 20 bucks including the fuel rail

Turns over too long before starting

An engine temperature sensor that halfway works could be telling the ECM that the engine is already warm but the problem is more likely to be a fuel pressure problem or both. A fuel pressure leak-back within the system or lack of initial prime cycle ( the prime cycle is activated for about 3-5 seconds when the key is turned to the on position regardless of whether you start the engine or not.) To check this; have someone listen at the fuel tank (unless your pump is noisy, and most of them are) and when you cycle the ignition all the way off for about 5 seconds and then to the on position ---WITHOUT TRYING TO START IT-- you will hear the pump make a buzzing sound for 3 to 5 seconds each time you cycle the key off for about 5 sec and on for 5 seconds. If you can hear the pump cycle while doing this test then try cycling 2 times before starting and if it starts immediately each time then you will probably need to replace the pump or regulator depending on a couple other tests to find out which one. If you have very high mileage and cylinder wear then it may also take a little longer to start. it should never take more than about 4 seconds to start and 2 to 3 is even better. look into those couple things and any questions or additional information --just ask
