On the front differential there is a thermal actuator. It engages your front differential. In parts catalogs they are called 4wd actuator. they are not easy to replace.

Have a 2010 Nissan frontier se 4x4 double cab, four wheel drive will not engage, light flashes on dash showing transfer and front axle not engaging

Possibly the vacuum line off the engine or transfer switch on shifter that ingages 4x4 front. Most are vacuum actuated and unless getting vacuum will not work. Check the vacuum lines.

Chevy 2002 2500 series, 4x4 will not engage, when shifted into 4wd a kind of grinding noise comes from the front like gears are not meshing.

No hubs on 2002 Chevy 2500. I'd check the front axle actuator (engages front axle when 4WD is engaged). Belive it's on the passage side axle tube of front differential. Could be wrong, but that's what it sounds like. Or the front ring/pinion is shot. They don't turn when not in 4wd.

My auto 4x4 isnt working in my kia jeep. is this a big job to get sorted?

This is a long/hard one to answer as a few things can cause this. First, check the vacuum lines running from the engine down to the front axles for cracks, and make sure you have vacuum to the axle hub. Second, remove and inspect the front wheel bearings, they should be set to proper preload and there should be no signs of water in the hub. And last if there is water in the hub, that most likely means there is rust on the front axle, and the pitting caused by the rust will not allow vacuum to build up and ingage the four wheel drive. the later requires a new front hub kit $$$.

4x4 on my 2005 f150 will not ingage

Is the system ESOF ( Electronic Shift On the Fly ) or MSOF ( Mechanical Shift On the Fly ) ? Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc ). Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft. If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case. If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.
