My 1999 chevy silverado 1500 four wheel drive won't engage. The truck is in 2wd now. When I push 4wd hi or low, I can hear the actuator try to engage the four wheel drive. The four hi or low button will blink , but will go back into 2wd. I sometime get the service 4wd light but not always. I replaced the four wheel drive switch and a blown fuse causing the the four wheel drive switch not to light up at all.

for 4wl need to be stopped and put in neutral or park it wont actuate while driving [ blinking light indicates failure to engage ] 4wd hi can do while driving --if fails also then check and test for actuator sticking --control module --or transfer case failure

on the 1999 silverado the transfer case has an actuator motor to engage from high to low range ,for 4wd there is an actuator motor on the front axle, had same problem in my 98 changed and works perfect

If all the lights are out then the 4wd switch is bad but,if it won't come out of 4wd-low then the 4wd actuator is bad or stuck.The 4wd actuator is what engages the differential from 2wd to 4wd.HOPE THIS HELPS!!!

check the four wheel drive fuse.if fuse is good it is probably the tccm.

As I recall the 96 blazer had electronic shifting for 2wd to 4wd. There should be a small panel on the drivers dash buttons for 2wd, 4wd lo and 4wd hi.

Simply press the desired button while stationary and if the system is functioning properly then it will shift and the light for the engaged type of drive will be lighted. Generally you would like to be in 2wd for this vehicle.

Have you checked the switch on the transfer case? Those switches tend to go bad and primarily operated the 4 wheel Hi.
