Carb 740cuts out while driving fuel filter empty

Volvo 1990 carb 740 cuts out while driving (distance between 1 to 3 miles) fuel filter empty if left for 5 mins will restart and drive.does this have a elec pre pump in tank or just mech 1 under bonnet? if 1 mech any ideas on poss fault

Check in tank priming pump, also check inline fuel pump. runs only while eng. is rotating.

That's the problem you must reset the choke or look for broken vacuum lines spray the choke plate with liquid wrench or pb blaster then with wd 40 and try to grease it as well and I'll bet theres no air cleaner to cover and filter the air this also protects the carb from the elements

I have a 2007 Chrysler Pacifica with 63,000 miles. It was a 1 owner (prior to me) & was well take care of with regular maintenance. The gas gauge will Not go above the 1/2 mark when filled completely full....


I do not own a pacifica but I do know quite a bit about cars and the digital read out gets in info from the gas gauge. so if the gas gauge is incorrect so will be the read out. I would start at the sending unit for the fuel gauge I bet you will find your problem there. The sending unit is most likely located in the gas tank

you have probably got a blockage in either the fuel filter or carb,so first check filter,if ok check carb.take fuel line of carb turn engine over see if fuel comes out if it does then filter ok if not change filter,

How far can i go on empty


I caution you do not drive until this car runs out of gas, it can damage the electric fuel pump that is located in the fuel tank, a very expensive fix. I have 35 years of experience here to back me up on this. As to the distance you can SAFELY drive
there are about 3 gallons left in the tank (if the gauge is accurate) when you hit empty, so in this car I would not fell safe going over 40 highway miles or about 30 in town miles. This figure depends allot on how you drive, easy on the pedal more miles, jack rabbit starts and you could go through the reserve in 25 miles.

Hi. Im writing this because when my" distance till empty" feature reaches 30 it just goes blank. So im wondering how many miles I truly have left and why it never reaches 0?


normally that occurs because the gas in the tank is too low ans sloshing around and the sensor is not able to give an accurate estimate of distance to empty, remember those are just rough estimates ans should never gallons leftbe relied on to be accurate to the last few miles by the time it says 20 miles you probably have 1 to 1-1/2 gallons of gas left

The fuel gauge shows 1/4 tank with 115 miles left until empty but the car stopped due to no fuel.


Bring it back to dealer and them recalibrate computer and fuel gauge. Someone missed that in new car prep

Oil filter is provided by year,make, model of your vehicle at the parts store. ---
Oil and fluids Oil quality
Engine oil must meet the minimum ILSAC specification GF-2, including ACEA A1, API SJ, SJ/CF and SJ/Energy Conserving.
Your Volvo has been certified to standards using ILSAC oil specification GF-2 5W-30. Volvo recommends use of oil with a quality rating equal to or higher than ILSAC GF-2. Equivalent and better oils include ACEA A1, API SJ, SJ/CF, and SJ/Energy conserving. Lower quality oils may not offer the same fuel economy, engine performance, or engine protection.
Volvo Cars recommends Castrol. Depending on your driving habits, premium or synthetic oils may provide superior fuel economy and engine protection. Consult your Volvo retailer for recommendations on premium or synthetic oils. Oil additives must not be used. NOTE: Synthetic oil is not used when the oil is changed at the normal maintenance is carried out. This oil is only used at customer request, at additional charge. Please consult your Volvo retailer. Operation in hot climates.

Sounds like you have a small bit of dirt or grit in the fuel system when accelerating it is drawn with enough force to cut off the fuel supply then is released when engine at Idle.
1 run liquid fuel line/injector cleaner in 1 tank
2 check fuel lines for debris
3 change fuel filters
4 have fuel tank flushed
here is trouble shooting order less expense to greater.
