Sounds like the clutch plate has suffered catastrophic failure - if there is an inspection point on the gear box see if there's any debris (springs, clutch plate material, etc) at the bottom of the bellhousing. A new clutch assembly should solve the problem.

Testimonial: "Thanks alot!!! Will do that and let you know how it turns out...Merry Christmas"

Hopefully it is just the clutch plate assembly that's at fault, the other more serious and costly cause is a blown gearbox.

96 nissan sentra 5th gear grind

Mor than likely damaged one of the planetary gear sets. Grinding in a trnasmission or rear end is a sign of loss of contact between meshing gears. Automatic transmissions engage two sets of gears internal to the trans to create a forward drive gear, changing between the gear sets creates different ratios anwhich in turn aloows for higher speeds. If the trans only grinds when in fifth range there is mopre than likely internal damage to the gears which 5th needs to operate. I would start by pulling the dip stick for the ****** and check for black or shiney material on the stick. I would then take a sample of oil from the trans by draining some from the drain plug if it has one, or possible drop the pan and check for foriegn matter in the fluid. Peices of metal shaving point to gear damage, and black material pont towards clutch wear/ damage. A worn or damaged clutch will cuase that specific gear not to engage and cause a grinding noise. Either way the concern is internal

What?! Really! The noise goes when the clutch pedal is depressed! So the noise goes when the release bearing (throw-out bearing) is engage? So how would that be a release bearing/clutch problem? If it didn't make a noise until the clutch pedal was depressed, it would be the release bearing! In other words its the input shaft bearing and/or counter shaft bearing in the gearbox. My 95 Camry cant go into 5th gear. I was told that it was the clutch because it was making a grinding noise. I got the clutch fixed but even after that its not taking 5th gear and its still making the...

If the clutch is bad it would make the same noise in every gear, because the clutch does always the same engage and disengage the trans and its different gears. So if there is a noise in a specific gear the problem is the trans-axle ( if the noise is coming from the trans axle.)
