2004 Jaguar, Vaden Plaus, car just quit running going down the road. Had to have it towed home Won't start, turns over, just won't start, says Restricted Performance.

Sounds like it is some type of 'limp home' mode.
It could be anything. It might be as simple as a bad Fuel Pump Relay. When you turn the Key to the ON position (not Start) can you hear a little buzz for about 1 second? That would be your fuel pump running. You need to see if the engine is getting gas and spark.

My 2004 X-Type suddenly went into 'Limp Home Mode' displayed 'engine fault' and 'gearbox fault' After pulling off the road I shut off the engine and remove the key and wait about...

Having a restoration shop and running several newer Jaguars I have seen similar situations. Intermittent multiple errors such as these can be caused by a low battery (or corroded connections) that "fool the computers". Also had a '99 XJ8 VDP have exactly the same issues over several months. Issue was a manufacturing fault in the sensors on the throttle body that caused the "limp home" mode - usually in stop and go traffic. Jaguar had an inspection and recall on the throttle bodies but that vehicle had gone through 3 different Jaguar dealers for service and none looked at TSB/Recall or performed the necessary checks on the throttle body. Tried cleaning the throttle several times (per Jaguar TSBs) but no change. Had to replace throttle body & problem solved (over 30,000 miles since then). Recommend making sure all air connections to throttle are clean and open and cleaning the throttle area to see if that helps.

On newer Jaguars (and other Al bodied cars) similar problems occur when the "ground" connections to the body become poor (usually through corrosion but sometimes through collisions). Connections may look perfectly normal but have high resistance. Careful when working with the connections - the posts are usually very loosely fastened to the bodies. The engine quit on a 2005 XJ8 VDP when I turned the wipers on (fortunately I was driving slow in a parking lot) because one of the forward bulkhead ground connections was corroded (looked normal but separated from body when removing the wires to clean them).

Also there occur occasional funny intermittent issues with all newer Jags that seem to be untraceable and non-reproducable computer "glitches".Good luck.

Amber gearbox light came on in my 2004 S type Jaguar. After shutting engine down and cooling it started with no light on. So, I limped home. The Q: Now that the light is no longer lit can I drive it? Or,...

you need to have the car scanned for freeze frame data code reading to see what happened at the time of the limp mode...Let me say that at times after heavy rain or even if you wet the fire wall near the throttle body, that can also cause the limp mode coupled with brake, dcs,and gear box fault and engine fault lights etc...You can actually do a hard reset yourself by disconnecting the neg battery terminal for 30 min..Let the car run and take it for a drive to make sure the shift points arent jerky. But have the car scanned and let me know what code comes up.

the best thing to do is to have the car scaned with the diagnostic computer to see what fault codes are stored.
acording to the fault code you'll be able to work out what's wrong with it.
I'm sorry i ca't be anymore helpfull.

2002 Jaguar x-type - exclamation mark came on and car begins to shutter, no acceleration and feels like it wants to stop, thankfully I was less than a mile from home and pulled it into the driveway, any...

X-Type were notorious for bad Transmissions. There is also occasionally a problem with the front differential where trans fluid contaminates the cylinder.

It sounds like you trans is starting to go. Did the exclaimation have a sunburst around it? And was the warning yellow or red?

Your car went into what is called "limp home mode". Did you try to restart the car once you turned it off? If so, was the warning still on? My guess is light does not come back on right away, but will return when you get to the right temperature or gear while driving.

Sorry to bear the news, but let me know if I can help.
