Tip & How-To about Cadillac DeVille

Cadillac Northstar Overheats

This can be caused by a number of things most commonly failed headgaskets. You can use a cooling system pressure tester to pressurize the cooling system to see if it holds pressure if not then the headgaskets are likely leaking. You can also get a chemical tester to check for exahust gas in the coolant, if exhaust gas is present then replace the headgaskts. If both tests turn out fine first make sure your cooling fans are working if so remove your thermostat to see if engine stays cool, if so replace thermostat. If nothing works up to this point you may have a broken water pump or clogged radiator. You can use a laser temperature gun to check for hot/cold spots on the radiator if you find any replace. Otherwise remove the water pump to make sure the plastic impeller is not boke and still attatched to the shaft.

engine runs 15 or so will shut off and starts when cool. Replaced fuelfilter and fuel pump relay. still does the same thing.

If you don't have any check engine warning light on your dashboard relating to EGR system means it has to be the FUEL PUMP according to you fuel pump relay and fuel filter was replaced but the most common cause by that is fuel pump...to verify have you try to install Fuel Pressure Tester to a fuel line it might not be the specified psi while observing the tester a several minutes tester shows it dropping down the pressure till it shut off by itself.

try bleeding the air out of the cooling system right after you start the motor up. this will allow you to get all the air out but not steam. do this until the coolent comes out. common cause, it could be vapor locking and not letting the coolent flow causing OVERHEATING. hope this helps
