I have the same problem, thought they were frozen or the motor was frozen but after a bit of searching on the net it would seem that i had a bad earth and it's a very common problem.just run a wire from the - on your battery to the motor and they magically come back to life, saved me £370 which bmw quoted me!!!
The earth wire from negative battery terminal to motor casing worked a treat - thanks! The local garage were mystified and about to call up BMW to have a look, then I read about this and it worked.
I have this same problem, i was about to go out today & buy a new wiper motor. Luckily i looked for this or i'd still have the problem. Thanks guys. x
They could be frozen to your windscreen.
I had the exactly the same problem with my wife's 2005 mini. Wipers stopped working, but rear wiper worked and washer worked. It had a blown fuse ( the one for next to the wiper relays). ReIays checked out OK. Replaced fuse and wipers started working again briefly and then started working erratically or not at all. Wouldn't turn off, stop unannounced or not at all. Checked fuse again. It wasn't blown. Then checked all the grounds on the wiper motor etc and cleaned them. Still no improvement. Motor worked fine when I checked it with a jump wire. Suspected a module problem. Took it to a local garage who hooked it up to diagnose the problem. They confirmed it but they couldn't fix it. Said they could order a new module from mini and install it but we would still have to bring it to the dealer to have it programmed. Insane. Just because we live it the computer age doesn't mean we need a computer to operate something as simple as windshield wipers. Not wanting to drop a thousand dollars to get my wipers working, I hunted around and found a new simple non-electronic 2 speed wiper motor with intermittent that will bolt it with no modification from a company that supplies them for heavy equipment.in Oregon. ( amequipment.com). The part number is 230-2005 , 230 series wiper motor, 12V, Coast to park, RH housing. They come in a LH housing as well so be sure to order the RH one. It bolts right in and the spline for the wiper is the same as the original. The unit is more compact and slimmer than mini's so slides into place very easily unlike the original. Order a switch and 7' wiring harness along with it for about $160 USD shipped to your door. Works great and saves you a bundle. With the harness, etc it's still $50 cheaper than a rebuilt OEM wiper motor.
