The dearly beloved ford van ,love them or hate them ,i love a ford ,right now will not start off the battery ?? Now a few causes here come to mind ,have you hit it with a hammer yet and swore at it ,because if not then thats the problem.Next step is put a test light on the glow plugs feed to make sure the relay is working, this is what i suspect Check this out and if it doesnt work get back with another posting as er indoors that has to be obeyed wants to go out

Sounds text book of a common fault.

The Escort 18D uses a Lucas CAV primer system, they are prone to fail. This lets the fuel drain back to the tank making it almost impossible to start. When tow starting the main pump can generate a suction which pulls the fuel through but normal cranking just isn't quite good enough.

Change the primer head and a new fuel filter, should be about £20 / $38

If UK, the part number is D12-6234 from most motor stores

Regards

Lloyd

My year 2000 escort van wont stat but lights work

Make sure u have enough petrol in your car, there is fuel supply to the engine, immobilizer is disarmed. if all this does not help then you need an expert to check if u have power to the coilpack, module, HT leads, plugs and to the injectors.

Supertine belt diagram Ford Escort ZX2 1999 Old brken off now replacing it with new but no picture or diagram showing how its to be installed properly.

If timing belt broke when the engine was running then a belt wont fix your problem as when the belt brakes the valves stop straight away and the crankshaft will still turn over at least 4to6 times adn in that time could AND would bend a couple of valves at least.if
not a lot more problems BUT if you still go ahead with fitting the belt then all the casings are marked to fit the belt and the keyway in crankshaft is always at 12 oclock to start with.. Ron

Just fitted new tdi1900 engine.will start off tow ,wont start off the key, can you help. maz

Verify the glow plugs are functional. Check for +12v on the glow plug circuit when the key is turned on. If the engine is used, consider replacing the glow plugs. Good luck.

Just stopped running at 65 mph

It sounds like a faulty ignition coil, or ignition module. Both of these things are fairly easy to replace.

Obviously it is worth while checking all of the fuses first.

You could obtain some aerostart (or similar starting spray), and spray a bit into the air filter. If the car does not even splutter, then it is most likely an ignition system problem.

Another option is to remove a spark plug lead, and attach an old spark plug to it, then earth that plug against the body of the engine. Turn the engine over, and watch for a spark.

It is pretty easy to figure out how to replace a faulty ignition coil. Just obtain a replacement, and observe how the existing one is fitted. Unplug any wires that are attached to the old one, and plug them straight onto the replacement. Unbolt the existing coil, and bolt the new one in place.

My escort van is out of timing need to set timing again

YOU NEED TWO 6MM DRILL BITS, THERE ARE TWO HOLES TO PUT THESE IN, ONE ON THE CAMSHAFT AND THE SECOND ON THE PUMP. SLOWLY TURN THE ENGINE BY HAND UNTIL THE TWO HOLES LINE UP WITH HOLES BEHIND THEM, THEN PLUG WITH THE DRILL BITS. ITS NOW SAFE TO REMOVE THE BELT BY TAKING OFF THE TENSIONER AND LOCKING OFF. PUT ON THE NEW BELT AND RELEASE THE TENSIONER SLOWLY AND REMOVE THE DRILL BITS. TURN THE ENGINE BY THE NUT ON THE CRANK SHAFT A COUPLE OF TIMES. THEN PULL BACK THE TENSIONER ALL THE WAY, THEN LET IT GO SO IT SNAPS AGAINST THE BELT, IT IS NOW TENSIONED AND JOB DONE
