Tip & How-To about Toyota 4Runner

All cars and trucks, how to properly jump start a car.

Hook up the positive cable Red to the positive cable on the car to be jumped and the car used to jump the battery both cars off. Next on the car with the dead battery hook up the negative cable to the frame of the car if it is a liquid or lead acid battery, next hook up the negative cable to the car that will jump the other dead car. Warning an arc can cause an explosion if there is gas coming from either battery so when hooking up the negative cable be sure to the negative cable on the frame. Next start the car and rev it to about 800 RPMs hold it to 800 RPMS for about 5 minute's before try starting the other car, this will allow the other battery to charge up and will help start the car. If you have small jumper cables like #6 copper give it about ten minutes to charge before try starting or you could damage the alternator of the charging car. once the time has elapsed try starting the other car, push throttle down once while cranking it over and hold pedal half way till it starts, do not crank for more than 30 seconds if it does not start wait for the battery to charge up again to try starting. with low voltage condition if you crank the car and it slows down it can damage the computer by drawing to much amperage caused by low voltage. Remember not to crank for a long period of time as it can damge the starter and or the computer, if voltage drops below 10 volts it can damage the computer of the jumped car.

How do I jump start my car

You can use a jump box or another car. Using another car while running hook the red cable of the jumper cables to the positive battery terminals on each car. Hook the black cable to the negative battery terminals on each car. Now try and start the car with the dead battery.

Hi, I have a 2008 Pontiac G5 and I accidentally kept the lights on all day. Since I only have a positive (red) connection, I ground the negative connection to metal as well as the other car negative connection to metal? Please Help.

sounds like you are on the right track. Hook the jumper cables up to the dead car first. The red cable should go to the jumper terminal as you mentioned and a good place to hook up the black cable is the bolts on the strut tower.

then with the other car running hook up the red lead to the cars positive battery cable and then the negative to a good ground. Let the two cars sit for about 5 to ten minutes to give the dead battery a chance to charge.

Once the dead car is started let it idle with the lights turned off for at least 45 minute to an hour or drive it for the same amount of time with the light on (I assume you will be driving in the dark) or if its day time drive it for 30 to 40 minutes with the lights off. This should be enough time for the alternator to charge the dead battery.

How do you jump start A battery on the 2007 buick lucerne

Very simple.

First hook up Positive Red and Negative Black terminals to the battery in the known good car. Then hook the Red terminal on the opposite end of the jumper cables to the positive Red terminal of the battery in the known bad car. Then, carefully, without shorting out the connectors, connect the final black jumper cable to the 'frame' of the known bad car.

Hope this helps.

How do you hook up booster cables to the battery of a 1999 Breeze. I notice that there is a negative mount on the frame, but I can't seem to locate a metal surface to put the positive cable on. Where is it?

Along with the solution provided above be sure to hook up the positive cable Red to the positive cable on the car to be jumped and the car used to jump the battery both cars off. Next on the car with the dead battery hook up the negative cable to the frame of the car if it is a liquid or lead acid battery, next hook up the negative cable to the car that will jump the other dead car. Warning an arc can cause an explosion if there is gas coming from either battery so when hooking up the negative cable be sure to clamp the negative cable on the frame.

How do I jump the battery?

Hook up the red cable wire to the positive terminal on the battery of the car to be jumped, then hook up the other red jumper cable wire to the jumper vehicles red or positive terminal, it is recomended on the car to be jumped that you attach the negative cable to a metal bracket on the motor or body that can be attached securely (good connection), then attach the other last cable to the negative battery terminal, if you cannot find a suitable bracket to attache the negative cable to use the negative battery terminal. When doing all this try to keep the two ends of the cables seperated from each other, always wear safety glasses when working on auto batteries the can explode if a spark or flame gets too close to the top of the battery.
