have you tried to pull the fuse from the alarm. is the alarm a factory or after market. if it is a after market alarm look under the dash on the drivers side there will be the wires to the alarm just pull the fuse. the other thing to do is disconnect the battery every nite
e: subaru legacy transmission dipstick
Transmission dip stick is behind the engine in front of driver side firewall. Move a few hoses out of the way, look down and you'll see it has a yellow top. Other side (passenger) lower down yet, again move a few hoses aside, yellow top handle, you'll find the shorter differential dip stick. In either case, if your gaze reaches the ground, you've gone too far.
I would bet you drained the transmission oil and not the engine oil. It is a pretty common mistake.
How much oil did you add when you where done. is the oil level on the oil dipstick now reading overfilled? Is there any fluid on the transmission dipstick?
hi yes ticking in early model subarus is very a common valve/lifter prob in most cases a decent oil change or anti ticking treatment can quieten it or stop the noise altogether however in some cases the noisy part may be damaged beyond repair and need to be replaced
if there are no major problems present all it needs is a tune up(spark plugs, fule filter, oil change, air filter, fule injector cleaner). for a upgrade in fuel economy add a short ram intake, parts are fairly easy to install.
The dipstick has a black plastic handle in the shape of ring of about 1 inch in diameter. It is located on the left side of the engine (looking from front) behind the spark plugs. Best visible from the passenger side fender location (start looking from the left part of the transmission , the black handle clearly stands out on the white metal).
Warm the engine up, Remove the Drain plug and drain oil out (Drain plug is on the drivers side of the pan).
When oil is done draining replace the drain plug and install a new crush seal (silvery washer on drain plug)
Next you will need a Oil filter socket. Use the oil filter socket with a 3/8 drive ratchet with a 6 inch extension, remove the filter, it will be full of oil.
Use fresh motor oil and coat the gasket on the new filter and install. tighten filter 1.5 turns past hand tight.
Refill the engine with 5w-30 Conventional oil. (start with 4 quarts than check the dipstick) Subaru recomends havoline as this is what they come with from the factory.
Wipe up any oil that may have spilled on the exhaust cross over pipe.
the bung is on the bottom right (left as you look at the car) and is black in colour with what looks like a wind up toy key shape on top. its damn hard to turn though so give some pliers ready. or just take bottom hose off. it doesnt matter how you get the water/coolant out really.
