Wooshing noise when braking; brake failure

When the temp dropped below 15 degrees the brakes made a wooshing sound when you pushed the pedal. The next morning the wooshing sound was still there. When I applied the brakes at the bottom of the driveway there were none.

Today it is warmer, there is no noise and the brakes work just fine.

Power brakes use a connection to the car's vacuum lines in order to make braking easier. It sounds like the seal around the plunger is leaking when it's cold outside. The plunger is the part that goes from the brake pedal, through the firewall, into the brake booster (vacuum chamber). The noise you are hearing sounds like some air leaking into the vacuum chamber of the brake booster.

If it's only happening when it's cold out, I'd probably not worry about it too much, unless it becomes a constant issue, even when warmer out. One of the drawbacks of this problem means that in order to get the same stopping power you used to have, you may have to exhibit more force on the brake pedal than when it's not leaking.

If you are worried about it, a competent shop could probably replace this seal for you, where as other "big box" shops will most likely tell you that you need to replace the entire brake booster assembly.

Why do I hear air when applying brakes in 2004 Dodge dakota

the air you hear is probably coming from the power brake booster as a woosh noise. and unless it is affecting braking its probably something that has always been there but you just noticed it. the power booster is mounted to the firewall were the brake pedal pushes against it to give you power brakes.

The brakes on my 1997 Volkswagen Golf will periodically give out, the pedal going all the way to the floor, and then work normally at the next stop.

Hi Sdill, That must have been scarry! I suggest looking at the following:- Make sure there has been no separation of the brake linings from the mountings. Make sure that the rear brake assembly locators and retaining mounts have not come adrift. Check the front calipers and brake pads. Check the pedal movement and determine the normal movement with the engine running (car stationary) and the engine off and let me know the travel distance. Check for any signs of leakage of brake fluid on the inside of any of the wheels. Check for signs of leakage from the brake master cylinder. Check the flexible brake hoses for swelling or breakage. Check for broken or loose fitting of the hose to the brake booster and the one way valve operation of booster valve. When the failure occurs is there any braking effect at all? or does the pedal go to the floor with nothing happening? I'll be waiting for your reply. Regards John

Hello rickyjkoch: My name is Roger and I will help with your question. With the engine off, press the brake pedal down several times. Hold the pedal down and start the engine. The brake pedal should drop 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches toward the floor. If the pedal stays up and does not drop the booster has a problem. However if you hear a hissing sound from the dash area of the brake pedal the booster should be replaced. Should you need further help please just ask. Please rate the answer. Car stalls out when stopping only way to keep running is by having foot on gas and brake pedal but its not all the time

from the sounds of things you might have an air leak in the system somwhere, check your hoses for splits what happens is the system is overcompensating for you using the brake as this activates the brake servo and "steals" the air have a listen arround the engine bay area and see if you can hear a wooshing sound or a sucking sound, that might solve your prob, hope this helps

Brakes problem

jcakey: My name is Roger and I will answer your question for you. From what you describe the problem sounds like a bad vacum brake booster. A simple way to check is to do the following. With the engine off. Press on the brake pedal 4 or 5 times. This will deplete all vacum in the booster. Next start the engine while holding your foot on the brake pedal. The pedal should drop a couple of inches. If the pedal does not drop. The problem is the brake booster. When the booster is bad you will hear a hissing sound inside of the truck when you apply the brakes..
If the master cylinder is faulty you will wave mushy brake to no brakes.Your ABS and brake failure lights will be on. Should you need further help please just ask. I will be glad to help you. Please rate this answer as this is how we know your answer was useful.Thank You for using Fix Ya. Roger
