1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee will not start or idle unless accelerator is depressed. Sometimes this occurs even after the engine temperature has come up to normal state. This has only started since the outside temperaute has gotten cold <35 F. Thoughts?

often times the engine needs to warm up to normal operating temperature. this varies from makes and models. if you cant wait that long, having it idle for approximately 5 - 10 minutes should at least lessen the acceleration problem, but the longer you wait the better it will be on the engine.
Could be the idle air control valve or a dirty throttle body. The computer controls idle speed by how much air enters the throttle body and intake. You would need to check the throttle body and test the control valve.
there is a rpm magnet that bolt on top of your transmission i had a jeep that done the same thing and repleced that and havent had a problem sinceits located on the left top side of your tranny has one little bolt that holds it in and a wire coming off of it that should fix your problem.
The idle relearn needs reset. Keep your foot on the gas at about 900 rpm. Make it idle for about 5-6 minutes. Slowly ease up on the gas until it will idle on it's own, it might take a while. After you get it to idle, it might be idling real low, but on its own, Let it sit and idle until for 20 minutes. After that it should be back to normal. You will have to do this every time you have the battery unhooked for a while.
I just had this problem on my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Once the engine got warm, after about 15 to 20 minutes, the car would just die at random times, sometimes when doing 40 mph and sometimes at idle.
I ended up changing the Crankshaft Position Sensor and it cleared the issue.
Did you know Jeep did a recall and paid for replacement of catalytic converters on 1996 models (don't know about any others) - they reimbursed me for work done, up to a point - hope this helps!
