I think you should treat yourself to a new vehicle Joe. You are just chasing faults on this one! It is well past its sell by date.

Pete, is there any chance your speedometer is in Kph and you think it is in Mph. 60 kph = approx. 37 mph.
If not, I would say you need to replace speedometer.

sounds like speedometer cable is gone or the gears between the cable and transmission which makes the reduction for sppedometer if no cable on that year they have a sensor

i would try a speed sensor that would be the signal for both speedo and odonometer

i would have someone inspect the speedometer cable running from dashboard to the transmission
