Rear window defroster does not work - light says it is on

2002 sebring convertible rear window defroster does not defrost. the light indicates it is on. Chrysler mechanic, without looking at it, said you will need to replace whole window (about $800 including labor). Then i went on line and started to educate myself and now i see it could be less of a problem and less costly, i.e., defroster kits!! i am a female who does have to learn an little before approaching car mechanics so they do not feel so inclined to rip us off. no matter, please confirm that there is a less costly way out of this $800 dilemna, or not! thank you

THanks - Potentially, how long should it take for a good electrical mechanic to diagnose the ultimate problem, and to repair using the "kit" method?

I have a 2005 model and the exact same thing happened to me as debiw, where the clip attached to the window for the lead wire to clip onto has broken off defectively in my opinion, go to your dealer and also call crysler corp. and lodge a complaint and if enough of us do it they'll have to do a recall. Otherwise take it to apple auto and pay about 150.00 and they'll reattach the clip to the window and put on a longer lead wire so it hopefully won't happen again.

I have had this same problem with my 2000 Sebring Convertible. I was told that the rear defrost is often a problem in convertibles and hatch-backs. My problem is very obvious though. When I turn the rear defrost on - the light does turn on (as if it was working), but the power does not get through. There are small 'clips' on each side of the window that hold the wires. After time and putting the top up and down, the clips can come off. My passenger side clip is currently hanging - very visible. Many mechanics are afraid to fuss with putting it back on for fear that they cause more damage than good. Look on the sides of the rear window and you may see the problem. Good luck.

Your rear defroster has a relay that controls the current sent to the back window.

Question: When you turn on the defroster and the light goes on, does it eventually go off? The relay should have a timer in it that limits how long the defroster runs. If the unit isn't shutting off you may want to check and replace the relay.

If the relay is ok check to see if electricity is getting to the back window. Get a friend who has a multi meter to check for voltage at the back window. There should be contacts somewhere in the vicinity of the window to check. If you have electricity going to the back window and still no defrost. Its probably a short in the tracing on the window. You can look to see if the tracing is visibly broken somewhere on the window. Sometimes when you put stuff in the back seat or on the window ledge it could hit this tracing and break it in a spot. The break causes an open circuit so the tracing doesn't make heat. There are metalic paints designed to repair these breaks without replacing the whole window.

Good luck! And be careful.

Windshield wipers stop working when the defroster is on

The only thing they have in common is the ignition switch.

My turn signals, windshield wipers and rear window defroster stopped working all at the same time. The fuse and multi-function switch are both fine.

Check all fuses with test light or multimeter. I tend to agree with you that it is probably a fuse. Not knowing of any "hidden" fuses or in-line fuses on that system. But sometimes other fuses that are not labeled as wiper or turn signal might be used for power also. So, check all fuses including the ones under the hood.

Climate control only blows cool air on defrost setting. Speed works fine. When I pull 10A fuse it resets but only momentarily. 01 Chrysler Sebring Sedan.

Is yours a coupe, sedan or convertible? If it's a sedan or convertible, there's acalibration technique you can run. With the engine running, turn the temp all the way to the cold side. Turn the mode all the way to the defrost position. Put the fan switch to any position other than off. Then press the rear defroster button until you hear a chime. Let it go. The system will go thru some gyrations and give you a "report" in your odometer readout. A "0" is good.
You may have a bad control head. As you noted, the default mode is defrost, so if the body computer senses a loss of signal from the controls, it will put it into defrost.
Again assuming yours is a convertible or sedan, salvage control heads are fairly commonly available on ebay and in junkyards. The part is used in the sedan and convertible and in the Dodge Stratus from 2001 through 2006, so there are lots of them out there. It's an easy replacement which I would definitely try before tearing the dash apart.
The IOD fuse is the one in the middle of the fuse panel at the left end of the dashboard. Easily recognized by the "ears". You can pop it out with no tools.

Can you re-attache the defrost wire on rear sebring convertable window?

Possibly. The aftermarket does have a paintable product to repair the in-glass wires but I'm not sure how much it will do. A visit to your local auto parts store to make inquiries should be in order. It may prove helpful. Hope this helps.

I have a 2002 Corolla GS. Rear window defroster not working

The main cause for the rear window not working is a disconnected wire at either side of the defroster grid. You can see where the body harness connects to the rear glass.

The second most liekly cause are broken defroster grid wires.

I would suggest to you to obtain a 12 volt DC testlamp, and check for voltage as follows, at the rear defroster.

Hook the clamp of the testlamp up to a known good ground. The back door latch 'hoop' is great. Next, turn on the rear defroster, and place the point of the tip on the extreme side of the back window, on the grid. Does it the tester light up bright? If not, try the other side.

The light, moving across the grid, should get noticeably dimmer, if the grid is functioning properly. The light will go out when you encounter a broken grid wire..
