Dash lights have much to do with the outside lights. There is factory built in system with the dash lights. When the car is driven during night time the dash lights automatically become dim to eliminate the eye irritation to the driver.
If it is equipped with dimmer switch the variable resistance or its electronic circuit may be defective and be replaced.
Gday ate, geoff here, well it would seem that the brake lights are trying to earth through the park light system as they are in the same socket in the rear, check the earths from the light pack at the rear, and the then go from there tracing the earth circut even to the point of cleaning rust, mould/moss from them, geoff.
first check that the dash light dimmer knob is not turned to very dim (far left). It is located in the dash instrument cluster slightly left of center between the tachometer and speedometer near the bottom edge.
If that seems okay, check out the No. 13 fuse in the passenger's side under dash fuse box.
If the fuse is okay, you may have problem with the driver's multiplex control unit. This unit controls lighting for multiple other lights and switch indicating lights.
On most vehicles you have a dimmer switch ( not talking about headlights) which you can adjust how bright or how dim the dashboard lights are because some people want them bright and others prefer dim either check your owners manual or check all around for it from drivers seat ( within drivers reach) when you find it if you can't adjust it then you want to consider replacing dash lights or switch.
you have a roller switch, probably located on the bottom part of the dash by it's self by the drivers door, is turns up and down, turn it up and the lights will return to normal.
