I have a 2002 Ford explorer. I went to put gas in it and it acts like the filler neck is partialy plugged. It will take about a pint of gas ( the amount to fill the filler neck ) and then overflow. The level will go down in a second or two. But it will not take a steady flow. I disconnected the filler neck at the tank and the filler neck is wide open. There seems to be some sort of a check valve in the tank just inside the filler neck connection. I can reach in with a finger and push the check valve back, it is spring loaded. Any ideas?
Did you check the vent tube alongside the filler neck? If it is pinched or blocked with something, just what you describe will happen. The air in the tank needs some way to escape to make room for the gas, and it should be through the vent tube. If it's bent, pinched, blocked, you will have a hard time pumping gas in.
