Slipping gears on an automatic car is pretty serious; first, check the level in the automatic transmission fluid reservoir, which most people never check. If the fluid level is fine (if it's not, top it top to the correct level), take the car to a garage you trust - know in advance that replacing the transmission on a car this old may not be worth the effort unless the car is otherwise in mint condition.
