Heater quit just got this car a couple weeks ago. now the weather is freezing and the heater has stopped working. Should I go to the thermostat first? There's plenty of fluid. Can I test if the thermostat's the problem before I buy one? thanks, -Scott

Hi, you answered my first question about the Geo with no heat. I can't see or feel anyplace where there's a restriction in the hoses, i topped up the coolant reservoir, and let the car idle till the thermometer said it was warmed up, but the hose at the top of the radiator, and the radiator cap for that matter, still felt cold. Are these perhaps symptoms if a water pump has quit? do you know where it is on this car? thanks so much.

Thermostat regulates coolant temp so that the engine doesn't run too cool, It has no effect on the heater temp once the engine has reached operating temperature. Check that the hoses running from engine cooling system to the dashboard are not blocked, bent or broken. (Actually if broken, engine would lose all coolant fluid, and you would notice the mess). Check that the heater switch is doing its job, and actually activating the heater. All that said, If your car happens to have NO thermostat, engine will never reach a normal temp, and the heater will not work.

1995 Pontiac Grand AM SE. Heater fan works for weeks then won't go, try a couple hours later then it goes.

It sounds like the brushes on armature for (blower motor ) are worn. Sometime a bad spot on the armature from not being used often and also by being in the engine compartment where it is exposed to condensation. When the brushes stop at that particular spot, the blower will not start spin process unless it draws alot of current that may be why the fuse blew. You can remove the blower and examine or just make the change.

Thermostat or not?

the coolant lose is possibly causing the no heat problem. the lack of enough coolant to fill the heater core can cause it not to heat the car up. you need to find the leak. what engine you have????

OVERHEATS IF SITTING STAYS OK COOL IF MOVING OVER 40 NO HEATER FA

you can check if the water pump is working by feeling the top rad hose , if it is hot it should circulate into the rad and the rad should be hot at the top and cool at the bottom if the pump is faulty there will be no circulation of hot coolant into the rad. I suspect your head gasket might be blown if you are getting pressure built up in the rad. in that case you will need a new gasket and have your head skimmed
