There is a heat sensor located near the thermostat that goes directly into the block. Get a Haynes or Chiltons manual.

The thermostat is probably bad and causing your overheating. If that is not hte problem, then it would probably be your water pump.

Low coolant could be cause by a leak somewhere in the the system. I had to have my manifold intake gasket replaced to stop the leak. For now, what I would suggest doing, is just replace the coolant with DEXcool, and always keep it at the line in the coolant area. If, with the coolant full, your van is still overheating, it could either be your water pump (but you would hear a chirping or cricket noise) or it could be your harmonic balancer going (you would also notice that you're going through belts often, or that your belt is a little damaged)

Overheating 2000 chevy metro. no leaks, coolant is full.

Check out water pump for proper circulation of coolant. Radiator good? To avoid overheating use your heater full blast with open windows.

2000 Chevy venture gauge says its overheating and heat gets cold but then the gauge drops back down real quickly and heat works again. doesn't steam

You are low on coolant. There is air in the coolant system. This is the reason it jumps high with no heat.

Why is the low coolant light flashing?

The low coolant light is operated by a level sensor located in the coolant reservoir itself. If the low coolant light is on and the coolant level is full then wither the sensor is unplugged or the sensor is bad.

Sounds like you still have a cooling system leak issue like a cracked cylinder head.

Chevy 2000,Venture Low Coolant lights up while driving. Twice over heated Red light, temp gauge went all the way up. I pull over and saw the coolant is not boiling hot but coolant over flowing. No steam...

YOU NEED TO ADD MORE COOLANT IN THE OVER FLOW JUG. YOUR OVER FLOW JUG IS WHERE YOU POUR COOLANT TO FILL UP RADIATOR. KEEP POURING COOLANT DOWN THE OVER FLOW JUG UNTIL COOLANT STOP DROPPING AND STAY AT THE FULL COLD MARK.KEEP EYE ON OVER FLOW JUG DONT LET RUN DRY BECAUSE AIR WILL BE PULLED IN THE COOLANT SYSTEM CAUSE A LOT OF ENGINE OVER HEATING PROBLEMS.

1998 chevy venture low engine coolant light comes on but the coolant level is good. heater heat at max or is cold air. is this the thermastat?

you need to check the coolant in the radiator, not just in the overflow tank, you are describing a low coolant problem, the thermostat could be the resign you have no heat but it would not explain the low coolant light, remove the radiator cap ( only when the engine is cold ) and start the engine with the cap off and then fill up the radiator........HAVE FUN

My 2000 chevy venture is overheating and the heater is not working

could be that you are low on coolant, this would cause you to not get any heat and also would over heat.
