I have a 1999 Mercury Sable (3.0 Liter OHV), it was running perfectly until yesterday. I was on the highway at 75 mph + when the check engine light started flashing. There was no immediate indication of engine trouble other than the flashing check engine light. When I pulled off the highway and stopped at a light, the car began to idle extremely poorly. The check engine light continued to flash. A friends diagnostic computer indicated that there was a misfire on cylinders 1, 2 and 3. I have relpaced all 6 plugs and wires (original equipment - car has 132k miles)- no luck. I replaced the coil - no luck. Where should I look now?

Computer has detected a fault--may or may not relate to the work you did. Please get a diagnostic scan of your OBD II connection and report trouble codes back to us. If you are in US, Autozone and Advance, among others, have free scanning service. We need the codes to diagnose.
How do you know it's getting hot ? What is the Temp gauge showing ? Do the cooling fans work ? Have it checked for trouble codes an scan data checked .
It was however the correct thing to do in changing the fluid and filter - that's the first suspect. No no it wasn't , the correct thing would be to take it to a qualified repair shop . Hooking up a professional type scan tool an viewing data , inputs to transmission control module , ECM/PCM - engine computer etc. The control module controls shift solenoids -which shift the transmission . You could have 1-2 shift solenoid shorting when getting hot . View scan data is the only way to see this problem .
Check your vacuum hoses (They are 3/8" Rubber hosing on the right side of the engine, you will need to remove the air intake piping (Also remove the throttle body to make accessing them easier) This is the #1 cause of high idling in the 3.0 OHV and 3.0 DOHC sable engines.
