In order to start my pickup, I must press down on the clutch pedal. The switch mechanism that allows me to start the vehicle is I suspect misaligned for it requires a very HARD depression on the clutch pedal. Is this something I can fix myself?

  • martiz1 Dec 07, 2009

a very hard depression means I practically have to stand on the pedal before the switch is actuated so that I can achieve ignition.

What defines a "Very HARD Depression? Do you mean just all the way to the Floor? Or do you mean beyond all the way to the floor? Literally pushing it as hard as one can push. You can adjust the switch but it generally isn't an easy thing to do. It requires one to be a contorsionist to get at it. Might I suggest taking it to a dealership or other facility with ASE Certified Mechanics to have it properly adjusted.

Maeriz1,

Yes you can adjust it yourself. It is not difficult except for getting at it one must be a contortionist. The switch is located somewhere under the Instrument Panel or in some cases under the Hood near the firewall dependant upon what make and model the vehicle is. It will be mounted typically close to where the Clutch Push-Rod goes through the floorpan. Adjusting it requires loosening the Mounting Screws and re-positioning the switch so that it is actuated sooner. Typically move it in the direction opposite the direction the Clutch Push Rod travels to release the clutch. If the vehicle is equipped with a Hydraulically actuated Clutch, the Switch will be located near the bottom of the Instrument Panel with an Arm attached to the Clutch Pedal near the pivot point, Move the Switch closer to the actuating arm. I sincerely hope this information helps you.

Trouble shoot 2500masda truck that won t start after I replace clutch and slave cylinder

Did you reconnect the wires and re-position the clutch safety switch at the clutch pedal assembly? If this switch is not positioned or connected correctly it will not allow the truck to start.

Broken clitch cable on 2000 chevy impala...how do u replace it..the wires are broken

see this steps and fix it. God bless you
Clutch Cable Replacement The clutch cable provides a means to "break the drive" between the engine and the wheels. The engine spins constantly, but the wheels do not, so in order to stop a car's wheels without turning off the engine, the wheels have to disconnect from the engine. When the clutch pedal is pressed, the cable disengages the plates, allowing the driver to shift gears or coast without killing the engine.
A failing clutch cable may make the clutch pedal difficult to depress. If the clutch cable fails, the clutch pedal may remain on the floor and not return to its normal position.
To replace the clutch cable, disconnect it from the clutch pedal (usually inside the vehicle) and from the release mechanism or cable attachment that operates the clutch assembly (usually at the transmission beneath the vehicle). A new clutch cable is then installed and adjusted. (The specifics vary according to the vehicle and range from straightforward to very difficult.)

What does a clutch pedal position switch do?

It tells the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) what position your clutch pedal is in (pretty much like the name implies). The PCM will not allow the starter to work unless the clutch pedal is in the down position. The purpose is to keep you from starting the engine with the clutch engaged so the vehicle doesn't jump forward and kill somebody when you twist the key.

1990 nissan pickup will not stsrt untille preeing the clutch interlock switch on dash, then start up.

try pressing the clutch pedal down at different heights and see if it will start, if so then you will need to adjust the linkages to the clutch pedal. if it still won't start, then you will need to replace the neutral safety switch.

Where is the neutral safety switch located at

It is on the clutch pedal. Meaning the clutch must be depressed in order to start the vehicle, since this effectively ensures the vehicle is in neutral.

My clutch pedal has to go all the way to the floor to start engine and switch gears. What should I do?

check the fluid in the bell housing and add clutch fluid if needed. If needed check often and if problem still persist than you need to replace clutch assembly, slave cylinder, clutch plate whole shebang. $200. If you don't will cause major problems down the road enough to where your truck won't switch gears. But, b4 you do that check the adjustment on the clutch pedal you may only need to make a minor adjustment to where you push the clutch in a 3rd of the way down to shift/start your vehicle. listen 4 any changes when you push the clutch to the floor or when you take your foot off.

My 1990 Toyota pickup: normally to start it you press the clutch all the way in while turning the key. Now this is not working. The last time it did start when I pressed the clutch in there was the sound...

Push the clutch down while you are looking at the switch, it is right at the top of the clutch pedal. My bet is that there is a gap and the pedal is not engaging the switch. The sheet metal on the fire wall probably gave way. Check it out, then you can reinforce the firewall that the clutch safety switch is mounted on. Good luck. I just had this happen tonight. Much quicker then tracing wires.
