This may be as simple as a split heater hose, you need to locate the leak, check the hoses going into the firwall, the clamps may have eventually pressed into the old hose causing a split. to eliminate this simply replace the heater hoses and clamps, the smell is more than likely coolant leaking onto the exhaust. Check it out, drive safely.
Could very well be coolant, depending on what color your using, orange, green whatever, but it should feel a little oily when you rub it between your fingers. Top up your bottle in the meantime, and have it checked, before it does worse, more expensive/extensive damage to your engine.
