Your car should always run off of the alternator once it's started. If the wires are loose your battery just won't charge back up properly. You draw off the battery when you start the vehicle but the alternator can't replace that charge as well if cables are dirty or loose. Your system should run somewhere around 13.5 to 14.2 volts if the alternator is working properly. If when you turn on the headlights that voltage drops below that then the alternator is weak.

Have you been having trouble starting it? A real easy way would be to attach a multimeter,( DC voltmeter) and check voltage before and after engine is running. Should get 12-12.5 volts not running, and 12.8- 14.5 roughly when running, depending on how much charge battery needs at the time, which is regulated in the alternator.
If battery is lower than 12 volts, you may want to have it tested to determine it's condition.

I have a 1984 ford e van, 351, 4 barrel, i can leave it in the laneway running and wont stall, when i take it on the road, the van loses power, then stalls, and the battery is dead, i unhooked the battery...

sounds like you have a fule pump fault,,,the battery fault is strange??
unless the pump has a short on it, draining the battery,,,
the alternator will very soon pack up if you keep running it without the battery hooked up

Van would not start jumped it and it started then battery light came on after about 10 ks. When van stopped and shut off Ignition it wouldn't start again. Radio would not work either after it was started

The alternator belt, is it snapped? If so fit new one.

How old is the battery? Still the original? Maybe time for a new one if so.

Is the alternator whining? The bearings could be shot and a new or recon one will be needed.

Do the cheap stuff first, ie. the belt.

Vote for me if this helps. Thanks

I replaced the battery 3 weeks ago and everything has been fine. My wife drove around everywhere on Friday. She did not drive the van yesterday. It is now Sunday night. My wife went out ot start her van...

Your alternator is going bad. It should only put out 13-14 volts and therefore is overcharging your battery. This causes your battery to get a dead cell. If you replace the alternator and battery, make sure you check the cables for any shorts.

Electrical system shut down like battery was not charging, replaced alternator. Turn on headlights and battery still runs down in 5 miles. Lose lights completely. Where do I look next?

I would check my wiring harness for faulty connections and possibly burnt wires. Also trace the wires from your alternator to the battery. check them over. The battery may need to be replaced. If you let it run down alot and kept jumping it.

Charging system erratic

You need to Check the Belts for Tightness and replace the Battery Cables. When you Replace the Cables, you will need to Grind the Area where the Cables attach to Make sure that they are Contacting the Area Completely. A wire Brush will work very well for this. If the Belts are worn, they will Stretch out and will not allow the Alternator to charge the Battery. If you need more Help Just let me Know! Please Rate My Response! Thanks!
