What is happening to you is worn out sincronizers in you transmission. They are used to mesh the gears between shifts. They are made of brass and wear out easily on the 2nd gen cars. It grinds normally going into 2nd gear and into 3rd if its really worn. If you want a stronger transmission buy the 93 and up 3rd gen tranny. It is an upgraded transmission with dual sincros. Yours does need rebuilt. Or you can find one on the MR2 board for a good price used. I prchased a 93 trans for $1000. An older one will be about 200. Also it depends if its turbo, lsd or not. Good luck!

How do I fix a manual shifting problem. Is it the clutch or transmission. Is there an additive I can add to the transmission to try and help ?

Sounds like the syncro may b damaged. Typically a clutch problem would be noticeable in all gears, especially shifting into reverse when vehicle is running but not moving. Try giving a 2 count for engine RPMs to drop before going into third to see if that helps. Won't fix anything but might cut the grinding sound. Till you can get the tranny fixed or replaced.

1994 325 BMW shifting from 1st - 2nd gear is hard and grinding noise, does this indicate a posssible issue wth the gear box, clutch, or .......

unfortunately yes it does.its sounds like your 2nd gear synchro is out.unfortunately your tranny needs to come out to fix it.does it only between 1-2? or other gears? if all gears your cutch is goin but just between 2 specific gears a synchro times the gear teeth so they lock in and its off and teeth on the gears are the grinding you are hearing.sorry to have to tell yah that one.i always loved my old 325 is model always fun to drive.

Manual transmission, can't shift easily, no 2nd gear.

Throwout bearings may be shot. Otherwise linkage may need to be adjusted.

Grinding gears from 1st to 2nd, 3rd to 5 ok

Either your clutch is getting bad, or you're shifting down too soon, and up too late. Try double clutching. Push in your clutch and push it into neutral. Release the clutch, fan the gas pedal, push the clutch again and shift into 1st. All this does is sychronize the speed of the transmission with the speed of the engine. There were, in the 60's, a lot of cars with the old "three on the tree" that you had to do this every time, and you get pretty good at it after a while.

Hydraulic clutch grinding from 1st to 2nd - Toyota 1985 Pickup

Yes, your clutch might be worn and/or out of adjustment or the trans is worn. Your clutch may be fine also. Toyota's have a problem with there shifter bushings and seats. They brake and crack also causing shifting problems. And some times only one gear depending on the condition. If yours is broken, crack or damaged, you can find the parts from Toyota and there a whole lot cheaper than a clutch. Also I recommend adjusting the clutch if possible. Not all are adjustable. Check your clutch fluid.

2nd gear clutching

STOP Downshifting!
STOP Forcing gear change, watch the Engine RPMs and shift accordingly, HOMBRE's are as good as the operator's. Hombre's have dash shift indicators which illuminate when it's time to 'shift' and not before, This has nothing to do with gear oil either. If you've drained it, you best fill it immediately and make sure it's ample level. The heat these gears sustain in is inceredible, cooling lubricant is essential. Here's a tip, while engine is OFF, ignition key is engaged, dash is illuminated, depress clutch peddle, keep it depressed and walk through all gears with gear shift, shifting should be smooth and unpeded, including reverse. If resistance is experienced at one or more gears, gear alignment is off as a result of inproper gear shifting while driving. Continue to drive vehicle just shift slower until clutch needs replacement then do an entire drive shaft upgrade. It worth it, it's great truck.
