Want to change the water and antifreeze in our 1995 volvo and unsure of what brand and mixture to use.. thnx

Theoretically yes. Antifreeze has a higher heat capacity than water. Basically, a liter of antifreeze can hold more heat than a liter of water. I dont think it would be enough to cause an overheat though

just go down to your local auto parts store and buy your basic antifreeze -- you can buy a premixed 50/50,, but depending on where you live and the temperatures,, I would suggest buying 100% antifreeze and adding water to it,, if you look on the back of the antifreeze bottle there will be a chart to determine the correct ratio mix for your areas temperature.

If you have ever bought engine coolant, you know that there are many brand choices on the shelves. Although mixing brands generally doesn't create problems, you may want to consider a few factors before deciding what type of coolant to buy. Read on to learn how to buy the right type of engine coolant.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy Instructions

1. Use ethylene glycol base anti-freeze. It's used in the majority of cars. This is a 50/50 mixture of water and ethylene glycol; it also contains corrosion chemicals. The corrosion inhibitors are the main difference between most coolant brands. Since systems contain various metals, it might be better to go with the brand recommended by your car's manufacturer.
   
2. Look for phosphate-free antifreeze if you drive a European car and it requires this type of coolant. Adding coolant containing phosphates may cause deposits to form in the cooling system. Make sure you follow the manual's directions.
   
3. Consider using recycled antifreeze. One way to do this is to attach a machine directly to the vehicle's cooling system to recycle the coolant. Another option is to recycle the coolant at a recycling plant or on-site. Recycling involves the following procedures: vacuum distillation, filtration, reverse osmosis and ion exchange.
   
4. Visit your auto parts store if you're unsure as to what type of coolant to buy or use.
   

Depending on where you drive and what temperatures the car is driven in will determine the concentration of antifreeze to water. As a general rule premix, which is 50/50, is fine for most application. Different concentrations will change the freezing and boiling points of the antifreeze mixture, as well as, change the ability of the mixture giving off heat. A typical 50/50 mixture has a freezing point of about -35*F and boiling point of about 265*F.

Use any major brand antifreeze (green) available from Walmart, Sears, or auto parts store.
Don't use Dexcool, though.
Use a 50/50 premixed solution, or mix a 1:1 ratio of water to coolant which will result in a 50/50 mixdture.

That's the best mixture for all round use.

Prestone comes to mind at first but most major brands are the same. Follow directions and mix your antifreeze with water in the ratio the manufacturer recommends. Sometimes straight antifreeze is worse than hardly any. I believe most manufacturers recommend a 50/50 mixture.

It probably needs a thermostat check coolant fluid level make sure it has enough coolant then replace thermostat make sure antifreeze has a 50% water 50% antifreeze mixture.

all antifreeze is the same and can be used in all cars- but for summertime you want a half mixture of antifreeze and water
