Suzuki Vitara V6, MAF sensor, white smoke.

1996 Suzuki Vitara V6.
Original problem - Lack of power and engine cut out when hot, not wanting to restart when hot. A little white smoke from exhaust. Check engine light would come on after cut out. Fault reading MAF problem.
Now - Replaced MAF, rough idle and lots of white smoke from exhaust when cold, haven't been brave enough to take for a drive!
Any ideas?

Thanks for the advice. I don't seem to be losing any coolant and my oil looks fine. The smoke seems to get worse as the car warms and the revs drop to idle, no smoke on first start from cold. When I drive the smoke doesn't get worse as I'd expect from a blown gasket. Since changing the MAF my restart when warm problems are gone and the engine no longer cuts out but its idle has got worse. The car struggles to keep its idle and revs up and down between 500 and 900rpm puffing smoke like a train! Could a bad PVC or EGR cause any of these symptoms or have I just bought a dud MAF?

I have a simialer problem but i was getting neat fuel out the exhaust as well . i removed the engine because id got a replacement then stripped the old one and as i thought it was a valve timing problem.looking at the engine from the front the cams on the left bank had jumped one tooth out of time so fuel was not being burnt and coming straight through the exhaust.strangely it didnt seem to have a big missfire and idling and smoke got worse when warm.

Hi:
My first thoughts are that you have a head gasket or intake manifold gasket failure. This is why you have the white smoke. If you run it too long, your catalytic converter will be destroyed. Check for coolant in your oil too.

Suzuki swift gti 1996 starts but cuts out after 5 seconds

When starting/cranking, computer will activate fuel relay so that it will start. Once running there are fail safes built in - no oil pressure, bad signal from crank angle sensor or throttle position sensor, crash sensor activated (stops fuel pump) or even immobilizer faulty. Will it idle with Mass Air Flow sensor unplugged? Could be a broken wire or bad connector. Hope you have found problem by now! An auto electrician will find it very quickly.

I have 2001 Suzuki Vitara, just recently was having problems with car cutting off or put putting, so I took to a mechanic we replace fuel filter, check engine light was staying on he pur computer on it I...

Relaced all that and didn't check the catalitic converter. When you get codes for MAF sensor and 02 Sensors, the first place to check is vacuum leaks, if none are found then it would go right to the catalitic converter. You might want to consider another mechanic.

I have a 1997 Grand vitara V6 2 Litre The check engine light has been coming on intermittently for some time but has been okay.As of yesterday the engine RPM at idle has been very erratic rising and...

Hello and welcome to FixYa!

If the check engine light is on then there's definitely a problem. The engine rpm is erratic right? This can be caused by a faulty MAF (mass air flow) sensor. If the MAF sensor is faulty the idle will surely be erratic and may cause stalling.

You will need to have it replaced to make the vehicle back to it's normal operation again.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Machine is throwing a MAF sensor i am told my doesnot have one, doing research on my own. the symptoms match a throttle position sensor.

the grand vitara maf sensor is usually located in the intake air duct, from air filter to throttle body. mounted on the intake manifold. some maf sensors are mounted directly to throttle body. symtoms of a bad tps are---it will cause tranny shift issues, bucking, jerking, idle surging, engine cut off, hesitation on take off, surge while cruising down highway. have a good day !!

I have just had a maf sensor and throttle body put on my suzuki vitara 1997 2ltr petrol v6 engine as I had trouble with it jerking while driving. It still wont run properly it has no power to go up...

No power when going up hill could be a plugged catalytic converter or fuel filter. A bad ignition control module will act up when the engine gets hot and not energize the coils so they can provide spark to the spark plugs. There could also be a bad coil. The ticking could be a bad coil or spark plug wire that is shorting and arcing. If you take a spray bottle with some water and lightly mist the coils and spark plug wires with the engine running in the dark (outside at night) you will see the arcing. Autozone will test your ignition control module and coils for free.

Update on my problem to audi a4 1.8 1996

The MAF has been a source of trouble for Audi such that the cost of replacement was halved a few years ago.

I am not sure why replacing the MAF would produce white smoke - white smoke being symptomatic of steam from water or coolant ingress into the cylinders or extreme amounts of fuel entering the cylinders. The latter is almost exclusively a diesel problem.

Generally if the MAF is suspected of being the cause of rough running then disconnecting it will cause the engine management to switch to the get-you-home programme. If the engine runs better the MAF is probably faulty..

As a matter of interest, it is necessary when changing parts on Audi that only the correct parts are used. Not only must they look right and be intended for that year and model but the part numbers should also be correct. A couple of digits out isn't close enough...

I am not sure where the idle thingy is on your Audi - the earlier models used a throttle body with the idle/throttle sensor and idle control all integrated in one very expensive lump and that is how I discovered the importance of correct part numbers.
In order to save my customer from scrapping what was otherwise a good car, I took a can-opener to the throttle body and opened it and found two broken wires and mananged to repair them. I needed to do some tricky welding to put it back together. The car went on for another seven years afterwards...

The car made no white smoke prior to the repair but the idle was very erratic...
