Is that an expensive problem to fix? What would cause that all of a sudden?

May be caused by excessive heat from the disc brakes. The brake calipers might be sticking and need servicing or the brake pads might not be a good brand or quality level for this car or your driving habits. Were the brake pads replaced recently?..some brands/composition of brake pads do not work well on some cars. After some city (stop and go) driving, feel & sniff each wheel to see if one is alot hotter than the other three; that caliper might be seized or sticking, needing servicing.

Burning smell from drivers side rear wheel

This happens often on Fieros. It turns out that the clamp that holds the brake hose rusts. The rust presses against the hose, restricting it's flow. You don't notice when the brakes are worn and basically not working, but after repairs you get locked up or overheated brakes. Remove or replace clamp and or hose.

2001ford escape burning rubber smell and noise

Check the rear upper strut towers. These are notorious for rusting out, and causing the tire to hit the inner fender well. To my knowledge, no recall on this, but I've fixed a few with a rear quarter panel replacement from rock auto. You wouldn't notice it much on the rear of the vehicle. Smell the rear fender wells for burnt rubber odor.

Burning smell

If it smells like burning a burning plastic/ceramic then your brakes are locking up and burning. Next time it does it, see if the smell is coming from the rear tire. if so, its time for a brake job

Burn smell near tires and strange sound too

it will be one of two things...............either your brakes are sticking on slightly (frozen caliper) and its heating up because of the drag.................or the wheel bearings are shot and heating up when you drive it.................. that's all it can possibly be.
If you aren't good with the tools then its off to the garage for this issue.
