Well, yes and no.
If the red oil pressure light comes on, yes the engine could stop running. You could actually lose oil pressure, or the switch could fail.
A "change oil" notice would not cause the engine to stop.
The oil light comes on when the car shuts off because there is no oil pressure. Make sure it has oil in it. If so take the car and get the codes pulled off the obd computer.
You need to get the codes read. My guess would be some sensor is sending an overheating code to the computer which in turn is protecting the engine by shutting it down. If you don't have a reader, most auto parts shops will do a free read for you.
run fault codes and find the reason for the engine light coming on and shutting down the engine . The CDPU is doing the job because something has happened that will damage the engine or gear box
Does the oil light come on BEFORE the engine shuts down? I have to ask because it is NORMAL for the oil light to be on when the engine is not running. I had a customer that said the same thing just last week. After we wasted a bunch of time (which the customer ended-up paying for) checking the oil level, the oil pressure, and verifying correct oil pressure gauge, light, and sending unit operation, it turned out that the crankshaft position sensor was bad and causing the engine to shut down and it had absolutely NOTHING to do with the oil light - it was functioning as designed.
If the oil light is coming on before the engine shuts down, the first thing you need to do is check your oil level. If the oil level is OK, you need to check the oil pressure with a gauge to determine if there is an actual engine oil pressure problem or if the oil pressure sending unit, gauge or light is malfunctioning. Also, it is highly advisable to not drive the vehicle AT ALL if the oil pressure light is coming on while driving until the cause of the light coming on has been determined and repairs have been made. Otherwise, SEVERE ENGINE DAMAGE may result.
The ABS would not shut off the engine, I suspect something with the engine is causing the shut down (fuel pump, or other things) and the ABS light gets triggered during that event.
Oil pressure sensor blocked or faulty. both oil level sensor and oil pressure sensor activate the oil light. engine goes into safe mode and shuts off ignition.
Sounds like your 02 sensors are bad. This will cause speratic idle. Up down, up down. If it still fires a little after engine is shut off, then there is too much fuel in motor caused by faulty 02 sensors. This will also cause check engine light to turn on. The 02 sensors tell the computer how much gas to give to engine
when you say stalls, do you mean shut off of just get low on power?
my check engine light comes on and then oil press light come on and the car shuts off but the lights and music stayed on.
if its that the car needs oil and shuts down to protect itself but it will turn on minutes later.
if stalls periodically, shows check engine light and the car looses a bit of power, in the engine, :
1. your coolant may be having problems getting to the engine in the way it was met to get to the engine
2. the belt might be a bit off and that could be why you get the slipping feeling
3. your exhaust may be a bit clogged. or your engine may need cleaning
i had both problems my car shut off and my engine was slipping. my EXPENSIVE but great machanic found out it was my oil level and my coolant was rusty and not getting to the engine. now she drives like the original 97 olds 88
