As far as codes go, I'm thinking you were getting code 12 and code 55, which means (12) that battery was recently disconnected or went dead, and code (55) is the end of message code. I'm also wondering for sure whether you have a 5.2L, or 5.9L. Could you reply with more info like Make, model, year, and double check what engine, just so we get it right for you.
Testimonial: "Actually 1996 Dakota with larger V8. Son in Alabama with problem & I'm in PA long distance troubleshooting. Gotta love it. Thanks."
Can't just zip around the block on that one eh Dad? Any luck with engine info yet? By the way, how mechanically inclined is your son, just so I know how to better describe troubleshooting procedures.
How did he determine it was a no spark problem, rather then a no fuel problem?
Did this just happen all of a sudden, and was running fine prior?
Is he familiar with location of the relays, such as shut-down relay?

Motor1258. Thanks for help. Son is not heavily mechanically inclined but can follow directions. He has a multi-meter at least. The engine is a 5.2L in a 96 Dodge Dakota.
Checked at coil, no spark. The 12 code, according to Dodge codes, is also no spark at coil.
Definitely a 1996 Dodge Dakota 5.2L (318 cu. in.).
