I have a 1996 mercury sable with a strange problem. The car wont start, there is just a single click when you turn the key. I took the starter off and into an auto-parts store and they said that the starter was just fine, the battery too. It is not even cranking or trying to turn over... I have heard it could be the Transmission range selector, or neutral safety switch... any ideas?

Try running a wire from the + on the battery to the small electrical connector on the solonoid on the starter motor ,turn ign on then use wire to crank engine ,if it cranks but will not start then dealer only in case its the immobilisor

Pull the error codes in the ECM to see what is causing the no-start. It could be a faulty fuel pump or fuse for the pump or???? Don't guess---pull the codes and don't waste time and money. Even if you have to purchase an inexpensive code reader

If the car does not have a security system, I would check for voltage at the starter from the battery and from the key switch.
The power from the key switch goes thru the neutral safety switch before getting to the starter.

My 2003 mercury sable will not start. it is not the battery. it makes a weird click click noise when key is turned in ignition. what could this be?
If you are sure it is not the battery then it has to be the starter. If it makes just one click when you turn the key then the noise you are hearing is the starter solenoid. This means the starter gear is engaging with the flywheel but the motor is no longer working and is not turning the engine over. I hope this helps!

When I turn the key on my 92' sable ls, it will click but it wont turn over.? then randomly it will start again and act like nothing ever happened. is this the starter or alternater>?
If your battery is more than four years old, replace it. remove the starter and altenator and bring to autozone, where they test for free. If all three items above are ok, then you have a weird issue that involves alot of testing, or possibly an ignition cylinder?

try to check if the starter relay clicking while you start.If no maybe bad connection from ignition key. If the relay clicking maybe the connection to starter or the starter itself is damaged. try to direct the sol. of starter to batt. positive if it kick your starter is good.

Depends on the sound that it makes when you turn the key over.

Clicking noise...usually the starter

If it sounds like its going to start, but doesnt, most likely the battery.

If you have replaced the battery recently, then its the alternator.

Sometimes there can be oil build up over the spark plugs so it doesnt get the spark to start.
