2004 CTS - Occassional whine noise under coast.

Recently purchased a 2004 CTS with automatic transmission - 44K miles. Noticed an occassional soft "whine" when coasting at lower speeds (30 - 45 MPH for example). Suspect noise to be coming from transmission. Briefly shifting to N will remove the noise. Shifting back to D and continuing to coast, the noise may or may not return.
Accelerating tends to remove the noise too.
Otherwise, no other symptoms noticed and driveability is fine.

SOURCE: Transmission problems

First off, I'd try changing the fluid and filter in the transmission. I know a lot of cars claim "lifetime fluid" - it's BS. Believe me, even the lifetime fluids get very dirty. Change out the fluid and filter, and you could even add some Lucas stabilizer to it - that may well help cure the problems.

When the transmission goes completely, it may lock up the drive wheels, sending you into a careening slide, or it may kick out to neutral and coast to a stop. It's also possible that if it flat-out blows, it could fragment inside and you'd hear what sounds like bolts in a blender as you coast to a standstill.

Discounting the transmission blowing up, and just looking at driving in a drive gear other than overdrive, you're looking at more heat in the transmission due to the higher gear RPM, shorter fluid life, possible slippage of the bands down the road due to heat, and of course decreased gas mileage due to the engine running at higher RPM.

SOURCE: what are the functions of Resume &Coast buttons in steering wheel

If set at a specific speed and you have to slow down by hitting the brakes, The brakes turn off the cruise control. Pressing resume automatically turns the cruise control back on and accelerates to the previous speed setting. You can also use it to accelerate and by releasing it the new speed will be set.

SOURCE: Service Engine Soon

Yu might wanna scan the car for possible error codes.

Resources are available at:-

But I feel the fuel pump located in the fuel tank beneath the back seat and the fuel filter located in the hood are likely problem.

Low transmission fluid. Manual gearboxes normally use gear oil, automatics use transmisison fluid. Sill could be a bearing, just not a wheel bearing. Just curious, how can you tell its not a wheel bearing?

Tranmission doesn't shift properly, high rpms and whining noise

The transmission fluid filter is the problem. This service should have been done at 80,000 miles. A dirty filter will cause the charge pump whine and loss of charge pump pressure will cause clutch packs to slip. Do not perform this service yourself, Its messy and not for novices. Do not drive or damage to clutch pack friction plates will occur.

Occassional shrilling sound when I turn to park my car...back brakes were fixed less then 1 month ago...2nd time for the back brakes to be fixed....40,000 miles on car....the sound was not there before I...

Having the rear brakes done twice at 40,000 miles is ridiculous! something is definitly wrong. Could be a sticky park brake cable and may not necessarily be related to the noise you hear. The noise could also be a stone caught in the front brakes. Hope this helps!
